If you want a space-saving MFP and don't need a built-in fax, the HP psc 1350 makes an excellent desktop companion. The smallest of the MFPs in the roundup at 16.8 inches by 10.2 inches by 6.7 inches, the 1350 excels in print (4,800 dpi optimized when printing from a computer) and scan (600x2400) quality, and its physical interface couldn't be easier to use.

The control panel includes intuitive buttons, making more advanced options either invisible or accessible only when using computer software. Generally speaking, if you need higher quality, control the 1350 with your computer.

Media card slots (including xD) allow for computer-less printing of photos, although you'll have to print out a proof sheet first. Although print quality takes dips to 1200x1200 when used as a stand-alone device, you'll still get rich-looking photographs and borderless 4x6 prints. Add the optional six-color ink photo cartridge ($24.99) and you'll get even better photo quality.

Performance (using USB 2.0) was generally good with sub-seven-minute letter-size photos and blazing draft text (10-page test document printed in 1:09). Best-quality text took significantly longer, while nine color copies were ready in less than nine minutes (under four minutes for nine B/W copies).

One complaint: The 1350 isn't the perfect choice for big jobs. The paper feeder holds a limiting 100 sheets. One more oddity: You can only make nine copies at a time when using this MFP as a stand-alone copier. So the 1350 clearly isn't the best machine for a busy office. Still, it delivers good color copies and offers a convenient fit-to-print button for easy photo enlargements.

Bottom line: If you don't need a fax, save some space and dollars with this excellent performer.
