The brand-new Canon MultiPass MP390 comes out our winner for its relatively small footprint, built-in fax, and excellent print and scan quality. At $200 it's the most expensive MFP in our roundup, but it also boasts the most features and user-selectable options.

The many buttons on the control panel give the MP390 a traditional copier/fax look and feel. Although it doesn't include a preview LCD (you'll need to print proof sheets for photos), you can use the status LCD to configure dozens of options. Media card slots are hidden under a front panel, and a USB port for direct camera-to-printer printing is available.

Photo quality ranked the best of all MFPs. The photos (maximum 4800x1200 dpi) look pretty respectable even when compared to photos from higher-end photo printers. Print times for a letter-size photo averaged about 6:30. The MP390 can also print borderless photos up to letter-size. Text printing at best and draft quality blazed. However, normal copying slugged along.

Overall, great print quality, good print times, and a straightforward interface and work flow process make the MP390 worth every cent, especially since it competes with MFPs costing $100 more.

Bottom line: The most complete of all the MFPs in the roundup also outputs the best-quality prints and does so quickly. It's well worth the $200 investment.
