Get your hands on the world's most popular free operating system.

Last week we told you what to do before you install Linux. If you missed it, take a look at this article. If you're a newbie and you're following our advice, then you'll start with Mandrake Linux.

Get your copy of Mandrake Linux

You can get a copy of Mandrake Linux in one of three ways:

  • Buy the full version
You can buy Mandrake Linux online or at your local computer store. Either way the basic version is going to cost you anywhere from $30 to $70. The full version includes the disks, documentation, and tech support.

  • Order the download edition
If you're on a dialup connection, or if you don't want to clog your Net pipes with a huge download, you can order the disks for dirt cheap. Remember, Linux is free, so you're just paying for blank disks and shipping. Here's where you can get the download edition. Also try CheapBytes and LinuxMall.com.

  • Do the download
On the show, we're planning to download Mandrake from linux-mandrake.com. We'll show you how you can get it for free, but we'll also tell you why it's a good idea to support the open-source movement by joining the club. We'll also give you a few tips on speeding up your download, such as by using Download Accelerator Plus (DAP).

Download Mandrake Linux

Search the page for your processor type and drag a few of the links into the DAP window. DAP will find the fastest mirror for you.
