Announced in June 1980, the Apple III is a notoriously bad computer. It was designed for the business market, but even businesses had trouble justifying its high price, which ranged up to $7,800.

What made the Apple III a failure? In order to make a smaller machine, Apple crammed too many parts into too small a space. This scheme might have worked if someone had inserted a cooling fan. The machine ran so hot its parts expanded during use and the chips popped out. There are numerous stories of how Apple III owners had to drop the machine from a short distance in order to reposition the chips.
