You'll notice that Steve Jobs and Apple computer play a big role in this list. Not only did Jobs take the GUI from the Xerox Alto, but three of the five computers we're featuring have Jobs behind them.

Announced in 1983, the Apple Lisa was a brutal flop. Most everyone knows that the Apple Lisa was named after Steve Jobs' daughter, but Lisa officially stood for Logical Integrated Software Architecture. Because the Lisa cost a staggering $10,000, it was doomed from the start. Its importance in the history of computing is that it was the first machine with a GUI and mouse designed for the mass market.

According to John C. Dvorak, "There are claims that Apple manufactured 100,000 Lisas, but sales figures are hard to confirm." Regardless of how many were actually sold, we do know that Apple dumped thousands of Lisas in a landfill.
