On some continents, cellphone users are flocking to a new audio personalization craze: Adapting cellphone rings to pop songs via ringtone websites. You can hear chirping versions of Eminem's "Stan" or even A-Ha's "Take on Me" on cellphone rings all over Europe.

Though the United States has been slow to catch on to the customized ringtone craze, several companies are now aggressively seeking out US customers. Today, with the right Nokia phone on the right plan, you can easily start augmenting your musical ring collection.

This cellphone sound wave is only hitting the United States now because of cellular format standards. The dominant format in Europe, GSM (global system for mobile communications), enables easy wireless reception of new ringtones. The United States currently uses multiple cellphone formats, making it difficult for companies trying to market wireless ringtones. Compatibility has been a major stumbling block for ringtone websites in the United States.

However, we've assembled a few of the best ringtone sites for those lucky enough to have the right phone (usually a late-model Ericsson or Nokia) with the right plan (Cingular or Verizon -- check around in your area). It should also be noted that in order to get ringtones on your phone, you must have SMS. SMS (short message service) is usually an optional feature on many cellphone plans in the United States.
