With Canon's new version of the immensely popular Digital Elph, you'll never miss that perfect snapshot opportunity. The Canon PowerShot S300 Digital Elph is so small (3.7x2.5x1.2") and sturdy that it's almost forgettable in your pocket. Of course, at $600, the S300 is more than just a fancy package. Canon has jammed great point-and-shoot functionality plus a few new surprises into this ultra-cool 2.1-megapixel camera.

The S300 still sports the brushed-metal look and flush face that characterized its predecessor, but it adds size and weight in addition to some nice improvements. Canon has upped the optical zoom to 3x, added video recording capabilities, and retooled the interface to give photographers better control over their photos.

Anyone familiar with the S100 will feel right at home. When you power the camera on, the lens pops out quickly and you're ready to shoot. If you're the trusting type who doesn't demand a certain level of control over your photos (the true point and shooter), then use the automatic mode. The camera will set shutter speed, aperture size, white balance, and exposure levels automatically. You can have the camera out of your pocket and ready to shoot in about three seconds.

The S300 also adds a little flexibility for the creative mind, with features like continuous shot mode, self-timer, and Canon's unique panoramic feature. After you snap a photo in panoramic mode, the LCD shows a split screen that lets you accurately line up the next shot. Then you can use the bundled software to stitch the pieces together into a beautiful sprawling photo.
