Toll Free ISP

written by Greg Melton on Wednesday, August 30, 2000
Q: How do I get online with my laptop from anywhere without paying long distance fees to an ISP?

-- Dave from Burlington, North Dakota

A: Unfortunately, the list of ISPs offering toll free numbers isn't very long. AOL does have a toll free dial-up number, but it only operates at 28.8 Kbps. The best way we found to get online without paying expensive long distance fees to an ISP is to sign up with a service provider that offers an extensive list of local numbers. AOL, Earthlink, and Juno all have more than 2,000 local numbers to choose from. So, with one of these ISPs, you'll most likely find a local number when trying to dial-up from a remote location.

Here's a quick list to reference the three major ISPs' local dial-up numbers:

  • AOL
  • Earthlink
  • Juno

We found another company that claims to operate more than 4,000 dial-up numbers. For $12.50 a month, SurfBest will give US and Canadian subscribers two personal email accounts and 10Mb to host a personal website. You can cancel anytime for no additional charge. With this price and long list of local dial-up numbers, you can't go wrong.
