How to make your DSL service work properly if your provider uses PPPoE.

There are two basic alternatives to PPPoE software supplied by providers:

  • Other Software

    • Windows (98/98SE/Me/2000): Arguably the most elegant, reliable, and trouble-free PPPoE software is Robert Schlabbach's RASPPPOE. It's free for non-commercial use.

    • Linux (also NetBSD & Solaris). Arguably the best PPPoE implementation is Roaring Penguin's PPPoE Client, also free.

  • Hardware

    • Modem. If you have a Westell WireSpeed Modem, you can add PPPoE support by purchasing the Westell Webshare upgrade ($50 as of this writing), which also makes it easy to share your DSL connection. (If you have a different modem, you might be able to switch to one with PPPoE support, either with the help of your provider or on your own.)
    • Router. A popular way to enhance a DSL connection is a low-cost router such as the Linksys BEFSR11 or BEFSR41. They not only provide PPPoE support and connection sharing, but also security from common forms of Internet attacks and abuse.
