Hard drives are works of technological art. Today's drives are amazingly reliable, but by no means does this mean you don't need to back up your critical data. Today, we'll show yo uhow to back up your data.

Though your hard drive might very well outlive you, it could crash. Or your house (perish the thought) might burn down, flood, or be burglarized.

Clearly, backing up to some form of removable storage is still a fundamental of computing. But what's the best way to go about it?

End of the Zip Era: What's next

Four years ago, I'd be telling you all about Iomega Zip and Jaz drives. Though these magnetic cartridge devices are wonderfully easy to use, more reliable options have since emerged.

In the first half of 1998, magnetic cartridge drives owned upwards of 95 percent of the removable storage market. Now they have given way to CDs.

We now live in the dynasty of optical storage. The downfall of magnetic cartridge storage systems can be directly attributed to CD burners. CD burner drives are cheap and user-friendly, and the inexpensive media holds more than six times the data of a typical Zip disk.

Moreover, because everybody has a CD-ROM drive, you can share your data with anyone. Burning your data to CD is an ideal way to back up your data.
