Unlock the mystery of DVD region codes and learn how get around them.

DVD-ROM drives that use a software DVD player check for region codes before playing a DVD. The code on the DVD must match the code assigned to the software in order to work.

To be able to play DVDs from different regions, you need to be able to change the code assigned to your DVD-ROM's software. There are several software packages available that let you do this.

DVD Genie
DVD Genie works with many software players that come with DVD-ROM drives. Depending on the software player, DVD Genie can automatically switch regions when you insert the DVD into the drive. Best of all, DVD Genie is free (donations are suggested).

Firmware region codes
DVD-ROM drives manufactured after January 2000 have the region code in the drive's firmware instead of through the software player. To make your DVD-ROM region-free, you need to update the firmware.

For more information about how your drive's firmware works and how to patch it, visit the Inmatrix website. A link to a list of firmware updates is at the bottom of the page, or you can click here.
