In this tutorial, you will learn:
  • How to set up a chat room powered by AOL Instant Messenger. (Note: you do not need an AOL account to do this.)
  • How to put an indicator on your website to let visitors know if you're online with AOL Instant Messenger and available to chat.

How to set up a chat room

  1. You must download and install AOL Instant Messenger 3.0. Even if you're already running AOL, you still need to download AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) if you don't already have it.
  2. Add AIM Remote to your site. Head to the site. Click the Start button. You will be asked a series of questions to help you customize your AIM Remote interface. Be prepared to answer questions regarding your screen name, choice of orientation (horizontal or vertical), and the elements you want on your remote (Instant Message, Add to Buddy List, Chat Room, and Email).
  3. A page appears allowing you to test your remote.
  4. If you like it, select Continue. A scroll box will appear with all the necessary code.
  5. Highlight it all and select Copy.
  6. Open up the HTML page you want to add it to, and then paste the code where.

Now when anyone comes to your site all they have to do is access your AIM remote to send you an Instant Message or to chat. Visitors to your site will need AIM 3.0 installed on their PC to engage in any kind of chat. If a person doesn't have AIM and they try to send an instant message or chat request, they'll automatically be redirected to an AOL page with instructions on how to download AIM.
