Leo Laporte shows you how to change Windows event sounds.

Windows Tip Have you ever wished you could customize your computer to greet you with sounds of your choosing? Whether you choose Windows-preformatted WAV files or ones you've created or downloaded, you have the option to easily switch sound properties for almost any event in Windows. Today Leo walks you through these steps to customize sound settings for most events within Windows.

  1. Single-click the Windows button.
  2. Mouse over Settings and open Control Panel.
  3. Click Sounds icon.
  4. Scroll through the menu and notice which events have a speaker next to them.
  5. To preview a sound, highlight an event and click the black triangle.
  6. To change this highlighted event sound, use the pull-down menu and select a new sound option.
  7. If you'd like to use your own sound for an event, hit the browse button and map the path to where the .wav file is stored on your hard drive.
  8. Click Apply after you've finished making your changes.
