With a couple of registry modifications, you can easily overclock your video card, and have smoother video and better frame rates.

Drivers

Download the most recent drivers off the Nvidia website or download the drivers off the 3dfx website. These drivers are backward-compatible and work with just about any Nvidia or 3dfx card that the typical power user will be running.

Installing our tools

Download this file if you are an Nvidia person, or this file if you are a 3dfx user. They're both registry edit files.

Note: If you are using Netscape, you must right-click the links above and select Save Link As to save the files.

You should see one of these two icons.

When you double-click these files, they will edit your registry.

Geek warning

Before EVER making ANY registry edits, back up your current registry.

I found the GeForce overclock Reg Edit floating around on the Web. I wrote the 3dfx one and have tested both on the most recent driver sets.

What the reg edits do

When you run these files to edit the registry, they change the values of the keys that allow you to use the factory overclocking utilities from Nvidia and 3dfx.

  1. Double-click the icon and you'll see a window that says, "Are you sure you want to add the information?"

  2. Click Yes and the program will edit the registry. Once it's edited you'll see a window telling you the information has been successfully entered into the registry.

  3. Click OK and reboot.

If you get a result that's different from the sequence above, you'll need to restore your registry.
