Spring Internet World - babesWWF, sumo wrestlers, and models
When you hear those three things together, whats the first thing that comes to mind? Is it network load balancing and e-commerce acceleration products? Well, thats what Phobos was hoping youd think. The company built a sumo-wrestling cage and had WWF superstars Test and Lana oversee the action therein. At the beginning of each show, they asked two volunteers to enter the cage, put on giant sumo wrestling suits, and try to topple each other. Best of three falls won. For the event I witnessed, two of the models from the wireless fashion show got in the cage. When suited up, the wrestler Test remarked, This is what youll look like when youre 40.

The event, not the product, is the only thing I remember about this booth.

Free domain names
Thats the model for Namezero.com. The company will let you register a free domain name (.com, .net, or .org) of your choice, host it for you, and give you your own email address with that domain. In return, your new website will display Namezero.com's banner ads, in a frame, at the bottom of your site.

Is that a computer on your head?
After Steve Case, the biggest event out of Spring Internet World was probably the Brave New Wireless World-- a wearable wireless computing fashion show. The developers of the show, Charmed Technologies, created the event to showcase wireless, wearable computing devices. The hope is that wireless developers will use these events to showcase their new products. I saw the first show and got a chance to interview some of the models. You can read the whole story here.

Wireless high bandwidth
I got a chance to see Ricochet's 128K wireless modem in action. To test the modem, I immediately checked out some video at Atom Films. The 100K streams on Real came through fine. Pushing a little higher caused some problems. The Windows Media had some issues, but I think that had more to do with how the software was installed at the demo station. The woman was kind of surprised that playing video was the first thing I wanted to do to test a high-bandwidth connection. What else was I going to do? Check email? My initial test was limited, due to the fact that I was not moving and we were on a trade-show floor. Trade-show floors notoriously have horrible frequency.

The modem will be available at the end of the summer. The cost will be around $200-$250, but you wont be able to buy it retail. Youll have to purchase it through a provider. Cost of service will be $60-$100 a month.
