'Fresh Gear' takes some new machines for a spin to see if they're worthy successors to laptops.

We like the idea of abandoning the keyboard for the pen. While some users, such as those with specific business-related needs, may appreciate the convenience of computerized handwriting, others may find it less than efficient (though perhaps novel) when compared to a keyboard.

Strenghts

  • Tablet PC Edition is good for surfing the Web and using customized applications that require very limited text input.

  • Provides cool and convenient ways to digitally store handwritten notes, almost like a real pad of paper. That's a blessing for those of us who love our Post-it Notes.

  • Allows keyword searches of digitized handwritten notes, though accuracy will still depend somewhat on the legibility of your handwriting.

  • While notebooks require both hands and a flat surface, tablets can be used while standing during an impromptu meeting, walking through an airport, or wherever.

Shortcomings

  • For tasks such as word processing or composing long email messages, typing is faster.

  • The accuracy of the handwriting recognition feature varies wildly from user to user.

  • Battery life with tablet PCs is even more important than with notebooks. Notebook users are accustomed to taking the power supply from meeting to meeting, but tablet PCs are tethered to a power supply. Most tablet PCs yield three to four hours of battery life -- and even less with wireless networking.
