People have said Stephenson has an almost prophetic vision of the future and a cult following among high tech thinkers. His latest book, Cryptonomicon is the first in a series, set during the World War II era and the present day.

The theme of the series is cryptology, but according to Stephenson, because cryptology is mathematics, which most people do not consider interesting reading, he has broadened his scope to include money, war, and power.

Stephenson is also the author of the cyberpunk classic Snow Crash, the Hugo Award-winning The Diamond Age, and Zodiac: The Eco Thriller. In his spare time, Stephenson has also written for Wired and is one of three authors ever to write a fiction piece for Time magazine. As an interesting twist, Stephenson also writes under the pseudonym Stephen Bury, which he shares with his uncle, J. Frederick George.
