Transmitting video from the top of Everest down to the land-earth station in Malaysia is no small feat. The transmitters Jim designed were all dependent on line of sight. Since there's no direct line of sight between the Everest summit and base camp, Jim had to find a common point that could be seen between both locations. Using a topographical map Bruton and a man who was a mapmaker for National Geographic in that region studied the map and found that point. It was about six and a half miles away from the Everest summit and about two and a half miles from Everest base camp.

At that point, Jim positioned a repeater that could catch the signal from the summit and pitch it to him at base camp. From there, he took the signal and decoded the video. That signal was then patched up to a satellite over the Indian Ocean and down to the land-earth station in Malaysia. Once in Malaysia, the video was seen live on television and the Internet by people all over the world.
