A desktop processor plus superfast graphics card equals portable-gaming bliss. Although the latest notebooks built for playing videogames employ that formula with varying degrees of success, one thing's for sure: The gaming notebooks you'll see on tonight's "Screen Savers" handle the hottest titles without breaking a sweat.

These laptops' overall performance nearly matches that of powerful desktop systems. The obvious advantage is that you can tuck a notebook under your arm and go.

TechTV Labs put the call out for the fastest notebooks possible, with the only requirements being a 7,200-rpm hard drive and 1GB of memory. We left the other specs up to manufacturers. Here's what we got.

  • Alienware Area-51m ($3,670)
  • Overall the Dell Inspiron XPS showed the best gaming performance thanks to ATI's Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor. Dell certainly benefited by having first crack at ATI's latest notebook hardware, but the other performance-notebook manufacturers are nearly ready with their own 9700 models.
