Learn how to modify an optical mouse.

The inspiration for Project Iris came from Metku Mods. The modifications on this site are, for the most part, cheap and simple. Most anyone can do them, and they're also cool. On today's show, I'll show you one of the mods from the site.

The mod at Metku Mods that inspired me was the firewheel. I wanted to do one of my own, and I also figured that I could add two colors of light instead of one. While I was at it, I decided to change the bottom LED to be blue instead of red.

I spent $40. The mouse was $30, LEDs were $4, plastic was $5, and the heat- shrink tubing was $1. The wire and glue I had laying around ($8 if you need to buy it).

Always wear proper eye protection when performing a mod.

Supplies
  • USB optical mouse
  • 5v red LED
  • 3.7v blue LED
  • 24 ga solid wire
  • Heat-shrink tubing
  • .25-inch acrylic or Lexan plastic
  • Super glue and de-bonder

The mouse I chose to use is a Kensington Optical Elite. I chose it because it has a blue LED already installed, shining at the wheel.
