Move movies off your ReplayTV box and burn them to DVD.

Navigate to the location where DVArchive stores your movies and shows. Again, the files look like standard MPEG-2 files, but they aren't. Audio will be out of synch, and the .mpg files contain bad info you'll need to remove to solve the synch errors.

  1. Download and install Womble's MPEG-VCR. The newer MPEG Video Wizard will also work, but I prefer the "try before you buy" MPEG-VCR.

  2. Start MPEG2VCR.

  3. Click File.

  4. Open MPEG Movie.

  5. Select the .mpg you want to use.

  6. Using the Mark In and Mark Out tools, cut out any commercials and extra fluff you don't want.

  7. Now break the movie into chunks. I prefer to start with 10-minute sections to see how it turns out.

    A. Using the Mark In and Mark Out buttons, set an in point at the beginning of the show and mark the out point at the first 10-minute mark. Use the time windows on the far right if you want to manually type in your time increments.

    B. Click the Copy button to copy the clip to the clipboard on the left of the screen.

    C. The marker in the video time line is at your Mark Out point. Click the Mark In button to set it as your next mark in.

    D. Type "20 minutes" in the time windows and click Mark Out once you see your marker at the correct out point.

    E. Click the Copy button to copy the clip to the clipboard and so on.

  8. Once you break the entire movie into clips, reassemble them.

    A. Beginning with the last clip, click and drag a clip out of the clipboard window and onto the gray desktop. A new window will open with that clip.

    B. Move the marker to the beginning of the clip.

    C. Click and drag the clip that precedes it into the new window. The clip will be placed in front of the last clip. A transition window will pop up each time you drag another clip in. Simply click OK.

    D. Continue dragging each preceding clip into the window until they all fall into place.

  9. Once all the clips are placed, click the Save button. Do not change any options. Don't even click the Video or Audio buttons. (If you do, the software will try to re-encode the .mpg.) Simply type in the name and choose the location where you want the new .mpg file saved. Click Save.

Note: Each .mpg will save at roughly the same size as the original, approximately 1.25GB per hour. The saving should take less than 10 minutes.
