Update: Sarah and Kevin are back from their vacation, and they've settled on a winner. Visit the second page of this story to learn which camera took top honors.
What fun is a European vacation without a side dish of American competitive spirit? Sarah Lane and Kevin Rose are convinced the British Isles are a perfect backdrop for no-holds-barred competitive photography.
Who's got the better camera? Sarah and Kevin will settle the score during their two-week visit to the United Kingdom.
Talkin' trash
Sarah: My camera is better than Kevin's camera because my resolution is 5.1 megapixels, compared to his 4-megapixel cam. I also have about a million more scene modes (sunset, indoor party, dusk/dawn, sports, etc.) and a 4x digital zoom (hello!). For real camera connoisseurs, the 5400 feels about as close to a traditional SLR camera as you can get. It's solid, yet with all the lightweight digital benefits!
Kevin: My camera is cooler because it's small enough to fit in my pocket. Have fun lugging that giant camera around the British Isles, because I'm not carrying it.
Sarah: Well, the best things don't always come in the smallest packages, do they ladies? WWE Smackdown! Sorry, honey.
Kevin: I choose to let my glorious digital images do the talking.
And in this corner...
Kevin calls his camera "Foto-Dawgg," but it's really the Canon PowerShot S400.
Canon PowerShot S400- 4-megapixel resolution
- 3x optical/3.6x digital zoom (11x combined zoom)
- In-camera video-editing features
Sarah's camera is the Nikon Coolpix 5400, or, as she calls it, "Magic Unicorn." Here's the scoop.
Nikon Coolpix 5400
- 5.1-megapixel resolution
- 4x optical/4x digital zoom (16x combined zoom)
- Wide-angle lens
- 15 preset "Scene Modes"
Shared weaponry
In addition to their competing cameras, Sarah and Kevin are bringing along the following accessories. They're going to be nice and share them.
Raising the stakes
To add a little fuel to the competition, Sarah and Kevin will each get a bonus point added to their camera's overall score by taking pictures of the following items. It's sort of like a scavenger hunt, except with men in Speedos.
- A picture of a drunk Irishman
- A picture of a haggis
- A picture of a London cab driver making the 'whatever' sign with his hands
- A picture of a Frenchman mocking Sarah, Kevin, or both
- A picture of a German man wearing a Speedo
