Add your ReplayTV to your home network and let the fun begin.

Step 1: Network the ReplayTV unit
  1. Turn on DHCP by using a router, your PC, or any other option.
  2. Connect your ReplayTV unit to your network with a standard Ethernet cable.

If you have problems with this, the ReplayTV owner's manual will walk you through the steps.

Step 2: Choose your playback software
There are several programs that'll play back MPEG-2 videos, but I had problems with almost every one. Don't bother trying any program other than VideoLAN.

Step 3: Install archive software for your computer

  1. Download and install DVArchive.
  2. You need Java. If you don't have Java installed, download it.
  3. Start DVArchive and choose a folder to store your ReplayTV files in.
  4. Click the File menu and select DVArchive Properties.
    1. Click the General tab.
    2. Specify your video playback software. Use VideoLAN for both MPEG Video Player and Streaming MPEG Video Player.

  5. I recommend changing no other options except the Local Guide to suit your taste.

Once you've installed the software it'll automatically detect your ReplayTV unit. Give it a minute.

To transfer shows to your PC, simply drag and drop.

From your ReplayTV you can set up scheduled tasks such as transferring shows.

Watch shows from your PC on your ReplayTV
  1. Start DVArchive on your PC.
  2. Bring up the replay guide on your ReplayTV unit. In the upper right corner it says, "This ReplayTV." Cursor up to these words and press left or right. This brings up the list of shows you've transferred to your PC.
  3. Select the show you want to watch.

When watching a show stored on your PC, you won't be able to fast-forward and rewind as well as you should. But that's a small price to pay for the extra storage space.
