Use Wi-Fi to share a dialup connection.

For today's wireless and mobile tip, we answer an email question from a viewer named Lance, who writes, "Is it possible to make a dialup connection wireless?"

Sure, Lance, you can make a dialup connection wireless. Back in the day, IBM made a big funky wireless modem, sort of a cordless phone for your notebook called the IBM Cordless Computer Connection. Good luck finding one of those on sale.

That said, you might think about adding a phone jack to your wireless phone, if you're good with a soldering iron. Funky, but from what I've heard your connection is unlikely to get more than 12 Kbps. That's about a quarter of what you could get plugging straight into the wall. Nix that.

Best solution? Put a Wi-Fi card in your computer, then connect to a desktop system in your house running Internet connection sharing. (You'll also need a Wi-Fi card in the desktop system.) Or take the PC that uses the modem and dialup connection and add to it a wireless access point and Internet connection sharing.

If you have the bucks, you can get a Wi-Fi base station with a built-in modem, such as the Apple AirPort. It has a built-in modem right alongside the Ethernet port.
