This Just In

Holy Toledo! It’s DVDuesday!
FilmThreat.com founder Chris Gore found some offbeat new releases for your viewing pleasure:

The American Astronaut: This independent “sci-fi musical western” was released theatrically the week after 9/11, so you may have missed it. “If David Lynch directed a musical, this would be it,” Chris said. Director Cory McAbee also made a unique commentary track—recorded in a bar in Brooklyn. (Here’s the Film Threat review.) Verdict: Buy It!

Class of Nukem High Limited Edition Collectors Box Set: My whole take on Troma movies is that they’re so bad, they’re inspiring: ‘I could do that!’ The Nukem High movies are like “The Breakfast Club meets John Carpenter’s The Thing,” he said. Verdict: Rental.

Spaced: This British sitcom has never played on U.S. TV, and this DVD set are actually Region 2. So why do you want to see it? “It’s about everything that’s geek culture,” said Chris. Starring Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg, it’s about a geek who works at a comics book shop, plays PlayStation all day, and fantasizes about Lara Croft. The show got the rights to use the Star Wars score in the UK, but not here. Unfortunately, Pegg refuses to release it in America without the music. But if you know how to hack your DVD player to play Region 2 discs, then you should get a copy. Verdict: Buy It!

First 50: Phantom Dust
Kevin P. gave his preview of Phantom Dust, an Xbox game that was previously a Japanese-market title and is now available here at a bargain price of $20. Here’s what he had to say:

“The game starts off with a bit of bad news: Apparently, a creepy dust storm has forced humans to live underground. The upside is that thanks to the mysterious qualities of said dust, you now possess some super-duper powers! talk about a trade-off!

“After sitting through the most uneventful and awkwardly paced intro of your life, you'll be eagerly awaiting all the action this game has to offer.

“It's certainly not for everyone, but that doesn't mean everyone shouldn't try it. In fact, the fine folks at Majesco are releasing it for $20 here in the States, and as such... I say take the plunge. Phantom Dust deserves your cash, so go ahead and buy it.”

Cosby Cloning Gone Mad
Channel101.com, the program/site where people enter their homemade TV pilots and strive to not get canceled, has its first breakout hit: House of Cosbys. Created by Justin Roiland and co-directed with Steven Chunn. House of Cosbys is an animated series about an inventor who creates a Bill Cosby cloning machine. Sadly, the clones are progressively degenerating, though a “Super Cosby” pops out every once in a while with special powers. Why? "I like Bill Cosby, and I wanted to clone him," Justin said. "It started out with Cosby, but moved on to bigger and better things." Like super heroes, mutant Cosby robots, and evil geniuses. Go to ComicSacrifice.com to find more House of Cosbys delights.
