Battle Stations!
With the cancellation of any Star Trek series comes the traditional swell of protest from disappointed fans, and that’s certainly the case with Star Trek Enterprise. A global effort to save the show has arisen with Paramount’s announcement last month that the latest Star Trek is getting the axe at the conclusion of its current season. Recently, fans staged a rally at the gates of Paramount Studios in Hollywood, and Brendan Moran was there on the scene to report from the front lines. The tense situation threatened to turn ugly when a group of Star Wars fans in full storm trooper regalia arrived to taunt their Star Trek nemeses, but fortunately violence did not erupt.

Good Goobly! It’s DVDuesday!
The one and only Chris Gore, creator of the highly esteemed movie-reviews and news site FilmThreat.com, dropped by to comment on this week’s biggest DVD releases:

Lost in Space Season 3, Vol. 1: “Your memory of Lost in space is better than what Lost in Space actually is,” said Chris, who noted that you can tell how good each episode is according to the costumes. (Silver = serious, velvet = silly.) This set has a lot of silly episodes and not many bonus features. “If you’re a DVD geek like me, you buy DVDs for the extras—but there are virtually none on this disc,” he said. (Four discs, 15 episodes, $29.95) Conclusion: Rental!

Incident at Loch Ness: This mockumentary by director Zack Penn follows German director Werner Herzog as he searches for Nessie. “It’s a comedy that’s not funny,” said Chris. “There is one funny part: the director doing his commentary stops because people walk out of the room.” Conclusion: Rental!

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: “This is a movie that I rushed to the theaters and saw on opening day,” Chris said. “It works on two levels—there are jokes for adults, and jokes for kids.” But why the PG rating for a cartoon based on a Nickelodeon character? You can see SpongeBob’s butt, which Chris insists is actually a homage to Walt Disney’s butt-exposing tradition. Conclusion: Buy!

TiVo Home Media Engine
Recently, TiVo released its Home Media Engine, or TiVo HME. All you need is a Series 2 TiVo and the latest software update, version 7.1. Once that's installed you'll have to figure out the super secret activation code (system menu, clear clear, zero zero).

Now you can load all sorts of interesting apps created by users that put info onto your TiVo via your PC, such as an eBay auction viewer, an iTunes controller, and games. Some of Kevin P.’s favorites include GoogleMap Plus and the Flickr Photo Viewer.

You can find these and others at hme.pvrblog.com.

Live Calls
Peter from Fort Polk, LA wanted to know if those TiVo HME apps will work with his DirectTV TiVo unit.

Nope. TiVo currently does not support HME on either Series 1 or DirectTV TiVo units.

Mike of Yakima, WA asked: Can you hack a TiVo to record programs without paying for the feed?

Yes, you can record specific times but you can’t schedule recordings.
