Taking Cat Art Into the 21st Century: This artist has combined cats and fractals, possibly for the first time ever.

No Excuse for Not Seeing These Nominees Before the Oscars: Salon.com is hosting the Oscar-nominated shorts for your viewing pleasure.

Cruelty to Celebrities: Bastian of quality programming FOX airs Stars Without Makeup.

Jpeg Spying
Kevin R. introduced another new way to snoop on people’s web browsing. You can see the images being surfed by users on your network with EtherPEG. It pulls the .jpegs and .gifs from the websites out of the ether or EtherNet and plops them onto your monitor. Here’s how its maker describes it: “EtherPEG works by capturing unencrypted TCP packets off your local network, collecting packets into groups based on TCP connection (determined from source IP address, destination IP address, source TCP port and destination TCP port), reassembling those packets into order based on TCP sequence number, and then scanning the resulting data for byte sequences that suggest the presence of JPEG or GIF data.”

This one’s for OSX users with inquiring minds: www.etherpeg.org.

Oscar Gadgetry
It’s good to be a celebrity. One big reason is because you often receive free stuff for being famous. And should you happen to be famous and get invited to the Academy Awards… well! You’re on the gravy train, my friend. Sarah was able to preview the many expensive gadgets stuffed into the “gift bags” given to attendees of the Oscars ceremony. (Like, they needed prizes to entice them to come?) For a rundown of all the cool tech items you could own if you’d only become a big Hollywood actor, read this article by Chi-Lan.

It’s Not Just For Searches Anymore
Rael Dornfest’s Google Hacks is the ultimate guide for the power Google user, and now he’s written a new edition brimming with fresh tips and tricks. Google has changed so much since the last edition, this new version is worth grabbing even if you have the original. “We actually had to throw things out that didn’t work anymore,” said Rael.

Rael demonstrated several cool new things you can do with Google, such as logging your cell phone into your Gmail account, graphing Google results over time at g-metrics.com, using your Gmail account as a storage drive, or calculating a century view of keywords at Google Century Share.

With over 400 pages of tips like these, the second edition of Google Hacks will keep you busy until number three comes out. Head over to oreilly.com to buy your copy.

Free-Play Friday
Want some good ol’ fashioned 2D shooting fun? Try the real-time shooter Soldat. “It’s mind-numbingly simple and completely addictive,” said Kevin P. With 18 weapons, six game modes, and 35 maps all rolled into an online multiplayer mode, it’s well worth the download.

The Feed
In tech topics…

New Fantasy: The creator of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, has joined Microsoft to create exclusive Xbox 360 titles.

Will Spam Eventually Save Lives? Spam filter technology is being used in AIDS research.

Don’t Mess With Zelda: Nintendo is “taking natural steps” to prevent a Korean company from producing a game that looks suspiciously like Wind Waker.

Italian Personality Test: An Italian scientist claims that breast size determines personality. He has also categorized them according to fruits. We don’t make these things up, really.

Live Calls
Nick from Los Angeles wanted to which is the best motherboard for gaming—Intel or ABIT?

Kevin R. said that Intel makes solid motherboards, but they’re not often #1 in performance. He prefers either ASUS and ABIT motherboards for gaming, and is especially fond of ASUS’ A8N SLI Deluxe.

Sean took up Sarah’s top-of-the-show offer that “we’ll answer anything!” He wanted to know whose feet are more ticklish: Sarah’s or Chi-Lan’s?

The question was not answered. But Kevin R. did offer the fact that “Sarah hates to be tickled.”

Sarah’s Damn Good Downloads
Sarah picks her favorite new Firefox web browser extensions:

MiniT: Move your tabs around via drop and drag.

FoxyTunes: Manipulate your iTunes songs through your browser

stumbleupon: Blindly jump to new websites based on your interests.

Web Classics
Today, we enjoyed the sight of a trampoline artist plunging to the ground. Unfortunately, between the time we find these web videos and the time we air them, the links change or they’re no long available. Thus, all we can offer is the site where we originally saw them. In this case it’s www.lienks.com.

Live Music Friday: Unwritten Law
The members of San Diego’s Unwritten Law have paid their dues. Not just another fly-by-night outfit, these punkers have been kicking out the jams for over a decade now, delighting the Warped skate-surf-snowboard crowd with their high-energy live shows and catchy, upbeat tunes. After releasing their debut, Blue Room, on an indie, the five-piece band toured relentlessly until they got picked up by Epic, which re-released Blue Room and issued their second album, Oz Factor, in 1996. By the next year, they left Epic and migrated to Interscope, where they recorded their third album in 1998. After some lineup changes, they issued Elva in early 2002 and finally scored a hit with the single "Seein' Red." By the end of the year, Unwritten Law signed with Lava Records and released the largely acoustic Music in High Places in early 2003. The album was part of MTV's Music From High Places series and was recorded on location at Yellowstone National Park. The band’s latest effort is the Sean Beavan-produced Here's to the Mourning, released just this month.

We’ll have a web-exclusive interview with band on Monday. Until then, head over to www.unwrittenlaw.com.
