ORIGINALLY AIRED: 2/22/2005
Drew Curtis, "Indestructible" Cell Phones, DVDuesday
Episode #5030
| See How the Other Half Clicks: Remember web surfing before broadband? No? Now you can simulate how those with slow internet access still suffer with the Digital Divide Simulator.
Silent Running: Our own Scott Moschella downloaded a silent song from the iTunes Music Store and stripped it of its DRM. Will he be thrown in prison soon? At least a lawsuit, you'd think. C’mon, Apple! We’ll Always Have Paris: Multitalented superstar Paris Hilton is causing gossip overload with new racy photos that were hacked from her Sidekick PDA. Kevin R. also reveals that the hackers accessed the voicemail accounts of celebrities in her phone directory via that pesky autolog feature. |
| Drew Curtis, webmaster of the all-mighty FARK.com news-links community, dropped in to talk about the FARK universe.
First, Drew successfully bid on naming Boston’s Fleet Center for February 28. His first choice, FARK.com Duke Sucks Center, was not accepted. So he’s going to go with class and rename it with its original name: Boston Garden. Next, he talked about FARK’s pay service, Total FARK, that promises “for a little, you get a lot more.” Drew says the site harkens to the original FARK. “What happened since we started it, a whole community has sprouted around it,” he said. And finally, Drew identified his two favorite stories of the year so far: A dubious tale of hot, young nuns on the run, and a “good ol’ shot myself in the ass story” about a would-be coyote hunter. |
| Building 360-degree panoramic photos can be easier than they look. Our own David Prager created a VR tour of The Screen Savers’ set at Studio 3 in but a few hours.
David used the PanaVue ImageAssembler, which isn’t free but he recommends for its ease of use. Here are some free photo-stitching programs that may not be quite as reliable: SurroundPhoto 3.0 |
| Chi-lan checked out the Motorola i315 and i325 cell phones, billed as being military-grade units that are nearly “indestructible.” Lab Rat Hahn Choi gives us his first look at these Nextel phones. |
| From out of the depths of Kevin P.’s sense of whimsy come these bizarre and sometimes sad auctions on eBay: Starry Night of LEGOS! Ying Yang Onion! Mystery Envelope! A Square Inch of Texas! Evil Kermit! Deer Butt Doorbell! |
| In tech topics...
Not Full Enough? A former Pandemic Studios employee says the Army didn’t get a game that was all it could be in Full Spectrum Warrior. The MAME Game: UltraCade applies to trademarks “MAME” in order to stop companies from using the freeware arcade emulator in commercial products that promote ROM piracy. Relax, Don’t Do It: Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak tells Apple to cool its threats of putting a clueless "hacker" in prison. We got the Woz on the phone to hear why he was offering to pay $1,000 for the hapless hacker: "I saw a kid out there who did not want to maliciously attack Apple," said Woz. "When they talk about jail time, that’s wrong. They’re threatening to ruin his life. I think he didn’t even realize the extent (of what he was doing)." |
| DVDTalk.com’s Kim Morgan returned with her picks for today’s biggest DVD releases:
Heat: Special Edition: “I think the two disc set is rather disappointing,” Kim said. While the three-part making-of featurette is good, director Michael Mann’s solitary commentary track gets dull after three hours, and the 11 deleted scenes were deleted for a reason. “It’s not that impressive. I wish there was more.” Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso: “Anime geeks are going to freak out,” said Kim of these early films by Hayao Miyazaki, noting that what’s special about these discs is they have noteworthy English-speaking actors voicing the roles. But the second discs offer two-hour storyboard sequences that “you have to be a real anime fan to watch.” Also, the South Park: The Complete Fifth Season box set arrived. You can read Kim's reviews at www.dvdtalk.com or visit her own website at sunsetgun.typepad.com. |
