Carousing Critters
Tony Millionaire’s characters look cute, but that initial impression won’t last long once you see them get drunk and bloodily lop each other’s heads off. Drawn in a detailed style reminiscent of Little Orphan Annie or Popeye, Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby the monkey booze it up in bars and sail the seas before inevitably devolving into mayhem. Their bizarre gags are revealed each week in Millionaire’s Maakies comic strip, which runs in many alternative news weeklies, and often appear in his Sock Monkey comic books.

Millionaire started drawing Drinky Crow in 1994 when he was living on a friends couch in between drinking it up. A bartender had offered him some drinks to do some comics, an arrangement he gladly accepted. Then he started doing comics for ‘zines, which were noticed by an editor at the New York Press, who offered him a weekly gig. Since then, Millionaire has had collections published by Fantagraphics and Dark Horse, had cartoons on Saturday Night Live, has won several Eisner Awards, and even has his own line of toys and assorted merchandise through Critterbox and Dark Horse.

Tomorrow, we’ll have a web-exclusive interview with Millionaire. Until then, visit maakies.com for more info.

Woo-Hoo! It’s DVDuesday!
DVDTalk.com’s Kim Morgan dropped in with her list of today’s biggest DVD releases:

Saw: “It’s a good concept—two guys wake up in this laboratory from hell,” Kim said. “It’s so layered with so many ridiculous moments, that it’s not scary. I think a lot of it was intended to be funny.” She liked the lively commentary track, “but the rest of the disc is not so great.”

Donnie Darko Director’s Cut: “The directors cut spells it out too much,” Kim said. With a little over 20 minutes added in, the new version reveals too much about its mysterious plot, according to Kim. She also wasn’t very excited about the extra features.

Justice League Unlimited: Saving the World: “What I liked about it is that it’s super cheap,” Kim said. The episodes are pretty good, but there are only three. “You might want to wait until there’s a better edition out,” she said. (Here’s a review of Justice League: The Brave and the Bold.)

Live Call
Michael of Council Bluffs, Iowa wondered whether the Mac mini will handle direct DV without dropping frames.

Although Kevin hasn’t tried it himself, he did see it being done at Macworld. However, he has used iBooks—with very similar specs to the mini—and those indeed dropped frames with DV.
