| Mike and Matt Chapman didn’t know they were destined to become another accidental Internet success story when they started creating their cartoon Homestar Runner.
“Homestar was created out of boredom in the autumn of 1996, and then the Internet version was created in 2000 out of boredom as well,” declared Mike. In fact, the brothers lived apart, working together long distance on the series. “We did the first seven remotely, then decided to step things up a notch in 2003,” he said. “We did it out of our own time and pocket for three years we never expected it to be a business.” Now their home site is brimming with characters and ‘toons, not to mention a store where you can buy such items as hats, T-shirts, and figurines. | Last weekend, Apple released the Mac mini and iPod shuffle to long lines of eager Macolytes. Kevin R. managed to snare one and he immediately set about answering the biggest question on Mac message boards: Can you upgrade it yourself? A good question, considering that Apple’s site says “Additional memory should be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.” – and charges $425 to max it out with 1 GB of RAM.
As Kevin R. discovered, it’s not hard at all. He basically took a putty knife and honed it using 150-grade sand paper, then slide it inside the case’s seam and popped out the innards. Since the mini uses standard PC DDR333 SDRAM, you can install your own DIMM much more affordably. Kevin R. also went ahead and put in a 100 GB Seagate hard drive – which is 20 GB larger than Apple’s biggest drive option. Of course, you’ll have to install your own copy of OSX. A viewer called to ask whether the mini can handle video editing with the same ease as its higher-priced Mac cousins. Kevin said that the mini does come bundled with Apple’s consumer editing software, but that it’s G4 chip isn’t as fast as the G5, and neither is the laptop hard drive. However, it’ll be fine for basic editing. “It’s a great little machine for $500,” Kevin concluded. |

| The latest Oddworld game, Stranger's Wrath, takes a different perspective – first-person – and a more action-oriented stance. You play a bounty hunter armed with a two-shot crossbow with “live” ammunition – literally live, that is. How does it play? Kevin P. spent 50 minutes doing just that for his preview.
“A game like this just can't be judged in 50 minutes,” he said. “Well, it can, but it deserves more playtime because I can't be certain the ammo types don't get stale after level two or if every mission's the same. Since I absolutely have to make a snap judgment, I'm going to say try it. I personally wasn't all that hyped about hunting and swapping ammo types but you'll know if it's for you after a quick rental.” |
| Joe from Pamona, Calif. asked Homestar Runner's Strong Bad why we don’t ever see his parents.
“You mean the worst question I have ever been asked? Who care what my parents look like or Charlie brown’s parents look like?” Ed from Troy, Mich. asked Strong Bad what OS he operates. “A couple of megachips of hard drive. I got a putty knife like that guy before. I can break open any computer you give me!” |
