Angry Cartoonist Comics
Johnny Ryan’s comics will most certainly offend you – before you start laughing despite yourself. His Angry Youth Comix takes extreme behavior to such absurd levels that it’s simultaneously shocking and silly.

“It’s pretty much stupid, retarded, slapstick crap,” Johnny admitted. His main character, Loady McGee, is an acne-riddled bully who does not hesitate to do whatever he feels like. And, to put it politely, this means very un-P.C. activities that can’t even be described here.

Ryan fell into drawing after graduation while pursuing a career as a serious novelist. “I got out of college and instead of writing letters to my friends, I made comics—and they said ‘You should do something with them.’” Thus, he began self-publishing his own crude and often surreal comics, putting out 11 issues before sending some to Hate illustrator Peter Bagge. “Peter Bagge really championed me at Fantagraphics, which is the primary publisher of alternative comics,” Johnny said. He also draws a strip called Blecky Yuckerella about a girl with beard stubble, which is printed in VICE magazine and the Portland Mercury.

We’ll have an extensive web-exclusive interview with Johnny Ryan tomorrow. In the meantime, head over to his website johnnyr.com for a look at his work.

Also, be sure to buy a copy of Johnny’s self-published, limited edition Marvel Super Pages – there are only 200 copies in the ENTIRE world!

You can purchase all of Johnny’s Fantagraphics comics here.

TSS Live Call
Call #1: Adam from Royal Oak wanted to know what comics Johnny Ryan read growing up.

“I read MAD Magazine a lot and I was a total Marvel freak -- and this was during the ‘80s when Marvel would publish anything.”

Call #2: Kevin P. of Los Angeles wondered if Johnny had any advice for beginning comic artists.

“You just have to draw all the time. Try to get them into mini-comic-friendly stores. Send them off to publishers. It’ll get rejected, probably, but you just have to keep trying.”
