Live Calls
Windows 2000 passwords
Peter in St. Paul, Minnesota, wants to give his old Windows 2000 PC to a friend, but he doesn't remember the administrator password. How can he get into the system with admin rights?

You're going to have to use a few hacker tools, Peter. Patrick recommends the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

You have to dump the sam file, which is where the operating system stores the password. The file is located in the Registry. It helps to have a utility such as the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to access the file.

If you have Windows XP, you can create a password-recovery disk. Learn more.

Faster dialup
Timothy in Madisonville, Kentucky, wants to know if there are any software packages he can use to speed up his dialup connection in Windows XP. He gets 29 Kbps on a 56-Kbps connection.

Based on your phone call's poor sound quality, Leo says that your phone line is your biggest problem. A dirty phone line causes most dialup problems. Windows XP does all it can to optimize your connection, so there aren't any software solutions you can use.

Try using a different phone jack or a different dialup phone number. You might find a cleaner connection.

Don't buy any software that claims to speed up your connection. They don't work.
