Director Matty Rich (The Inkwell, Straight Out of Brooklyn) has teamed up with Ubisoft to present 187 Ride or Die, a new urban-themed, plot-driven racing game. The game features an array of celebrity voices and likenesses, a bangin’ hip hop soundtrack, and some elements that only a creative force like Rich can bring to the game.
G4 had a chance to chat with Rich on the red carpet of G-Phoria and he told us why he expects 187 Ride or Die to be the hottest game of the summer.
G4: Are you a big gamer?
MATTY RICH: Oh yeah, I’m a big gamer. From back in the day, Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Atari. Now, Grand Theft Auto.
G4: What is your favorite new game?
MATTY: My game, 187 Ride or Die, which hits stores August 23rd. I served as the writer/director of the game.
G4: Anyone involved we might know of?
MATTY: We have [rapper] Guerilla Black in the game, [actor] Lorenz Tate. Guerilla Black did a voice and likeness and produced the whole soundtrack to the game. He would have been here, but he is in the studio working on his album.
G4: What can we expect from this game?
MATTY: In the game there’s a 10-minute cinematic that is really cool. Lots of explosions. I brought my Hollywood experience into the gaming world. This is my first game as writer/director. It was a fantastic experience.
G4: Is it different directing a game, versus a film?
MATTY: As a filmmaker, making a videogame is an incredible experience. When you see what I did with the camera, the effects, it’s crazy.
G4: Who are your influences?
MATTY: I got a little bit of Scorsese, a little Coppola, a little New Jack City, a little of my first movie Straight Outta Brooklyn. Every little thing is in this game.
G4: How is 187 Ride or Die different than others like it?
MATTY: It’s not like a regular street racing game where you just go. This has a story within a racing game, and you’re following the character through a beginning, middle and end.
