FIFA 12 represents not only the best FIFA effort to date, but one of the best sports games out there. Precision dribbling and improved physics make for a damn perfect soccer experience. . .almost.
The Pros
- Complex and responsive buttons for every action possible
- Insanely realistic physics make for the most realistic sports game on the market
- Vast career options
The Cons
- Complex and responsive buttons for every action possible
- Auto switching between players can be frustrating
- EA Online Pass is required to play online
FIFA 12 Review:
A single grandmother lives in the other half of my duplex. Ever since I started playing FIFA Soccer 12 with my roommate I have a sneaking suspicion she’s looking for a new place to live. Because everything that makes FIFA 12 so good, at the same time makes it maddeningly frustrating. And when we get mad, we get loud.
How wide do you want your nostrils?
From the jump, one of the most stunning features of FIFA 12 is the sheer number of options you have. I started off by choosing my team from a miles-long list of professional clubs and then creating my own player. The depth of customization was surprising; I could choose the exact nostril length and width of my player (I went with “finger-wide” for convenience).Your team remains your default and you can rack up experience with them to find out online which team has the most loyal fanbase.
Initially you may spend a few hours just trying to figure out which gameplay mode to check out first. Career mode features the ability to be either a manager, player manager or your own custom player. All of these offer different opportunities for soccer geeks to slake their insatiable thirst for more soccer.
When yelling “goaaaaaaaaaaaaaal” becomes a kneejerk reaction
After spending some serious time fiddling around with all of the campaign offerings, I actually started playing the game. You know, soccer? What makes FIFA 12 stand head and shoulders above other sports games isn’t a bunch of fluff and campaign modes; it’s the Impact Engine. The physics engine new to this year’s game makes a clear distinction from earlier installments top to bottom. Slide tackles look impossibly realistic, and with a little practice your players begin to look like they’re responding to your thoughts, not your fingers.
Unfortunately, this hyper-realism comes with a cost – a steep learning curve. Even long-time fans of the series will initially find the new defending and dribbling mechanics difficult to pick up. These features make the game both delightful and exasperating. You may press a button to head a high ball, but by simply pressing it twice you’ll kick the ball out of bounds on the far side of the pitch. But, just like anyone who memorized Raiden’s fatality in the original Mortal Kombat can tell you, practice makes perfect. A lot of freaking practice.

Another frustrating aspect is the auto-toggle between players. While it usually runs smoothly, more than once I tried to slide tackle just as it switched and my new player ended up slide tackling a grass monster. One of these times was during a particularly heated match and my player ended up getting my roommate a free penalty kick. Needless to say, my poor neighbor learned some fun new words after that goal.
The multiplayer offerings vary from simple exhibition matches to season and tournament matches you can customize with your buddies. For vanilla head-to-head online, the game not only matches you up by your skill but the individual skill of each of your players. So if you’re playing with a piss-poor team you don’t have to worry about getting matched up against Manchester United. Fair warning for anyone planning to pick up FIFA 12 used; you will have to pay for an EA Online Pass if you want to play anything online. EA is apparently really struggling for scratch.

Even becoming a fake soccer star takes practice
Much like any real soccer match, FIFA 12 can have you pulling your hair out at many points. EA Canada has taken a major step forward in creating an even more realistic soccer game by allowing players to control just about every movement each of their players make. While this can be difficult at first to get ahold of, once you have the buttons locked down, FIFA 12 feels about as natural as a soccer game can. The sheer amount of campaign and customization offerings ensures soccer fans will stay busy in between watching their favorite teams on television.

While the physics engine, and graphics / menu tweaks are defintely an improvement from previous FIFA's, it defintely feels to me ( a 10+ year FIFA veteran) that the franchise is plateauing.
I guess that is to expected, but many elements remain exactly the same from the most recent version (FIFA 11) - game types / modes (both online and off), creation center, stadium and game / team intro scenes, commentary etc. Is this game worth $60 new? - in my opinion, probably not - not too much of an upgrade from Fifa 11, I would wait for the price to drop to $40ish.
I would have also liked EA to perhaps include other commentary languages (Italian, German , Spanish) as part of the basic package (without charging $3 - $5 / language online) just to mix up the experience for people who play a lot. They have to create the commentary anyway for sale in those countries so why not just include it for everyone?
Same goes for Ultimate Team - a great concept but most def rigged (via the chemistry system) so people are forced to buy packs for the never ending 'special edition / on form' players that will keep coming out. Bottom line - your 'Ultimate team' with the best players will always lose to someones identical 'Ultimate Team' with on-form players, and new 'on-form' players will continue to come out until FiFa 13 is released - so people who spend the most / or have the latest players win. Having spent $50 - $100 / year on packs in previous years for minimal return, that will not be happening again.
Overall, a great footie game, not a drastic improvement from Fifa 11 so a 3.5 star out of 5 stars at most in my opinion and def not worth full price. Wait and get it used.

Uhmmm you know you can turn off auto switching right? Why did they give this review to someone who's apparently never played fifa before?
It's not really the games fault that online pass is required, that's pretty much an EA thing.. But whatever. If I can find a deal I'll pick it up, but if not I'll stick with 11.

Madden 12 and NHL 12 are a whole lot better than FIFA 12.

Have this game for three days, and I can't stop playing it!!!

This game is going to be awesome, but not as good as NHL 12 , the NHL series will always dominate the sports world, and the players are more talented gamers than Madden players

There's a few lines the commentator uses that were recycled from FIFa 11, this is a con, something you failed to pick up! Also the crap looking crowd in the stands, like they're in 2D. Of all the time they get to make this this is the best they can do?

@RPG-fan:
I have tried using that approach, because defending was never my strong suit, but I found that it doesn't seem to work. At all. Mind you, playing the PS3 instead of 360 might have had something to do with it, but I wouldn't expect there to be that much of a difference in the controls. I was actually forced to defend myself. It was easier than expected, but it was an initially annoying feature.
That being said, the passing system felt a little wonky at times too, but then again, it's the console crossover problem again. I have to say, this is still going to be one of my favorite games of the year.

"Complex and responsive buttons for every action possible" how is this a con? it means its a hard game that can be mastered. aren't cons supposed to be bad things? when has responsive been a bad thing? so would the game have been better if it was "simplistic control scheme that has a large delay from pressing the buttons and you are limited in how you can control your character." is that the dream of sports games?

Geez, what's wrong with having to learn how to play the game? At least, EA Sports did something different with this year's FIFA instead of just updating the roster. If you have a learning disability or just lazy, you know you can just switch from tactical defending to the defensive system from previous FIFA games where you just hold down A or X button (depends which platform you are playing) to take the ball away from the opposition. I hope next year's FIFA game, we won't have a reviewer who calls football, "soccer".
