LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game First Look Preview

LEGO Pirates

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game from Disney Interactive Studio retells the four Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer produced Pirates of Caribbean movies in LEGO fashion. I like the LEGO games. They're silly, they're campy and they make great co-op games, but the flaw is that past games have been formulaic and almost cookie-cutter versions of themselves. I feared LEGO Pirates would follow this trend, at least, that's what I thought until I got some hands-on time with the game at GDC 2011.

At first glance, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean looks like a LEGO game; it's colorful, it's bouncy, and everything is made of LEGOS. But after my glance turned into a stare, I noticed the jungle I was in had textures, leaves, vines, none of which were made of LEGOS. What surprised me wasn't simply the detailed landscape, it was how detailed it was. Another level I was shown took place on a pirate ship, but rather than being on a shiny, plastic Black Pearl, I was on a rotted wood, lines in the planks, realistic looking pirate ship.

LEGO Pirates

The characters around me were very much your flamboyant LEGO characters. Everything in the game began as actual LEGO pieces. It was someone's job to make items out of the LEGOs for the 3D artists to work with. If video game journalism doesn't work out for me, I want that job. There are tons of these items in the game. One thing LEGO Pirates hasn't changed about the LEGO series is the amount of collectibles. Gamers will again be rewarded for exploring, destroying, and working together. Another familiar feature is drop-in or drop-out co-op play. Players will be able to have up to eight NPCs on their team to choose from, each with their own unique actions and abilities.

LEGO Pirates will be released this May on just about every possible platform including the 3DS. The 3DS is powerful enough for the console version of the game to be ported over in its entirety, something that wasn't possible with the DS. Just because LEGO Pirates will be in 3D on the 3DS doesn't mean the developers have given up on the DS. The DS version will be a scaled back version of the game. It will be smaller than the other versions but will still include the core characters and gameplay moments.

Didn't really explain why this version is different from the others.

Oh well, I'll still get it.
