E3 2010: Call of Duty: Black Ops First Look
By Andrew Pfister - Posted May 28, 2010Call of Duty: Black Ops is going to be in an incredibly intense spotlight, probably like no other COD game before it. With all the industry drama surrounding the blockbuster franchise, most notably the personnel shakeup at Infinity Ward, many people who fancy themselves analysts will pore over the next Call of Duty game for any sign of franchise instability. Black Ops developer Treyarch, who has unjustifiably been saddled with the reputation of being the series' "B-team" and therefore gets extra scrutiny, has a lot on their plate, but based on the playable demonstration of the game I recently saw at a pre-E3 event, they are lacking in neither intensity nor focus.
We saw two levels, both of which were played on stage by a Treyarch representative (we know this because he inadvertently died during the demo). The first took place in a snowy, high altitude mountain range. But before we got there, we actually started off on the tarmac of an undisclosed airbase, sitting in the cockpit of an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane. Given clearance for takeoff, we cut to the plane already in flight, miles above our ground team and just below the atmospheric limit. Similar to COD4's famous "Death From Above" mission set in the airborne gunship, the pilots of the SR-71 use thermal imaging to track the ground team's movements and mark enemy locations. We're then transported to the ground team itself, and onto the core of the mission. They first made their way through a woodsy area, making sure to be quiet in the crunching snow as a patrol -- complete with canine unit -- strolled by on medium alert. After successfully infiltrating the perimeter defenses, the team rappels down an icy cliff and carefully manuevers through the mountain-side base, completes their objective, and starts blowing everything to hell. An intense escape sequence ensues through the snowy haze, which culminates in a desperate cliff dive and free fall into the frozen valley below.

The second level switched gears to Vietnam, and was reminiscent of the more intense, destroyed city/corridor-focused battles the Modern Warfare series has been known for. This Black Ops team fought through multiple locations, including frantic gun battles against the fortified Vietcong troops in blown apart office buildings. AK-47s were lying everywhere and grenades were flying a plenty (though not as much spam as I recall in MW2, at least based on my memory).

If there was any concern about where Treyarch's collective head was at, I took this first look at Black Ops as evidence that all the business nonsense surrounding the brand was extremely low on the priority list. It looked like they're definitely on the right track to recreating the COD feel in a brand new setting. We'll have loads more of Black Ops coverage as we get closer to E3.

I AM SO READY FOR THE NEW COD BOPS 8==D ()

After the last 2 COD games, i'm a little skeptical of the series. This does not mean I won't give this game a chance. Just because WaW wasn't the best shooter on the block doesn't mean Treyarch can't make a great game. Just look at MW2, very disappointed with this game and COD4 was (and still is) one of my favorite games.
Very interested in this game though, look good as far as I can see.

They should have a zombie mode that you have to unlock at the end of the game.

Infinity Ward already has a new game in development, since they cant brand it Call of Duty anymore, theyre calling it "Duty Calls: Warfare de Modern 3"

Treyarch IS the series B-team. They have yet to develop an engine for a CoD game. They just reskin an already finished game, and take credit. IW may have drama issues, but Activision just whoring out their game is an insult. And they've been doing it since CoD3.

they did well with world at war ..they will with this.

why not just slap Tom Clancy nah i just kid i am worried tho about the cod series even tho this is a diff develp. one thing, they need to get their royalties before activision gets there hands on them
firecloud42
the bar set do far is BattleField: Vietnam and it s pretty High

This game is gonna suck its just like world at war because it cuts into the modern warfare games. Its just a filler!

This game looks great. MW2 also looked great but didn't turn out the way anyone expected it to. MW2 failed on a lot of levels. A lot of people said that World at War is a sucky game but in my opinion it was better then MW2's multiplayer in a lot of ways. MW2 may have had more customization like weapons, attachments and kill streaks but at least in World at War the noob tube was not the 1st thing unlocked with guns.

After Modern Warfare 2 being complete garbage, I refuse to give any game with "Call of Duty" A chance.

looks pretty decent. IMO mw2 was a good game and i don't understand why so many hate it.
sure it pisses me off sometimes but what game doesn't? cod is a solid franchise and i will be looking forward to all future installments.

And here we see the real problem, NOT TREYARCH HAVING THE HELM, but the series having multiple releases in a relative year. Treyarch did a wonderful job with their last outing (WaW), and I'd expect nothing less but an improvement from before. Activision is KILLING this franchise as quickly as it has become an industry standard, by force feeding the series down our throats.

im done with call of duty games for good. especially all the crap craptivision caused.

Im going to get this on hopes that it's half as good as COD MW2, however that wont be too hard being that the Multiplayer was an Epic Fail. But it's going to be second to Halo Reach, in my book. Yes yes haters are going to hate me at saying this but Treyarch can't compete with the Bungie Monster!! (one word.. Beta(IW should've done that)). However if they include Zombie mode, it will definitly peek my interest. All in all i'm very interested on what Treyarch is going to do. Being that COD MW3 is being iffy, Treyarch has they're work cut out for them to deliver. Good Luch Treyarch!

Can you guess how many times he says "Ummm", "Uh", or "Like?

this game is awsom i mean really i love call of duty i mean its so amazing

I might check it out for zombie mode if they have it but the description of the first mission sounds just like modern warfare 2. Don't have high hopes for the single player. Maybe the Create a Class 2.0 will make the multiplayer more bearable than MW2.
