Dead Space 2 Multiplayer Impressions

By Christopher Monfette - Posted Sep 13, 2010

Though it’s not due to be released to the gaming masses until next year, Dead Space 2 is already getting its fans pumped up for another fright-fest set on a faraway, off-world mining colony. So far, we’ve seen plenty of the survival horror action we can expect at the core of Dead Space 2’s single player experience. But the innovative approach to multiplayer is only being revealed now.

You don’t often see competitive multiplayer modes in games like this, because it would too easily break the fiction. Why would a bunch of space miners be fighting each other over some flags or something? Instead, the lonely haunted spaceships of Dead Space 2 only set up a conflict between humans and the nasty Necromorphs, therefore you will be fighting both against and -- prepare yourself -- as the zombie-like creatures.

Also keeping with the fiction is the lack of any type of silly multiplayer endeavor like capturing flags or skulls or simply seeing who can kill the most enemies. In Dead Space 2’s multiplayer, you will have four space miners like Isaac (though you can make them all look a bit different with custom armors and gear) fighting against relentless waves of player-controlled Necromorphs as the miners work to complete a series of objectives. It’s sort of like playing a co-op level with three of your friends while four of your other friends do whatever they can to mess it up.

Strategically dismembering your friends will seem natural if you’re playing as one of the miners – pretty much all of their weapons and equipment carries over from the single player experience. But the Necromorph team, while lacking in any firepower – can use the specific abilities of the different Necromorph types to stalk, trap and devour the miners. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the way multiplayer works in Left 4 Dead, though in Dead Space 2, you have a few more options in terms of chooising your Necromorph and your spawn location.

Five objective-based maps will be available to play upon release of Dead Space 2 this upcoming January, but more could be made available through download.

Been waiting patiently for the f/u to this stellar sci-fi horror franchise; undoubtedly my favorite genre in gaming. Sounds like not only am i going to get another bone-chilling single player experience, but nearly infinite replayability with a unique and innovative approach to multiplayer. Sum it up: GENIUS

The only way I think this MP will be fun/cool is if they make it so if you are the basic creature with the blade like arms if you can like jump up in the air vents and sneak around like the AI does in DS1, Yeah they will have their signature attacks but I'm sure there will be some leftover buttons which they could use to make intimidating noises that will echo around to strike fear in the other players, With these you can truly feel like the deadly space predator that you're supposed to be.

awesome way to use multi player. I hate the necromorph so much but being able to play as one of them is gruesomely fantastic.

So...it's like Left4Dead, but the mutliplayer is an after thought instead of the focus of the game? Yeah, that's going to be good.

Why do game developers seem to think that every game needs multiplayer? A survival horror game does not get better with a deathmatch mode!

I'm right there with you Joker... I don't understand why some devs out there insist on adding multiplayer to games that otherwise don't need it. Just think if they had added multiplayer to, i don't know, let's say God of War 3.
Although it might make for an interesting concept it wouldn't add anything to the overall experience. The mp for this game is gonna only be good for one try, for no more than 10 mins, and then never to be seen again. I have faith that the single player experience will exceed all of our expectations.

single player is amazing but the mp looks like crap. I have seen gameplay trailer and it is bad. The resolution and textures of the campaign don't hold up and what you get is a bad rip off of left 4 dead. Maybe they should change the name to Left 4 Dead Space. Other than the mp though the single player should be incredible. Hopefully time spent on this atrocity called multiplayer doesent steal away from the campaign quality. and for the love of god, no multiplayer achievements.
