You don't realize how much you've missed side-scrolling beat-'em-ups until Shank sinks its dull prison blade into your gut. Wildly addictive action and smooth controls complemented by a pulpy grind house style, make Shank a must-play for fans of the classic genre.
The Pros

- Exaggerated kill animations
- A baddie-slaughtering blast alone or with a shank-brandishing buddy
The Cons
- Co-op is local only
- Clear-a-room combat not for everyone

SAVE YOUR BRAIN
If you’ve spent the summer having your brain bended by the likes of LIMBO’s mind-screwing puzzles or Lara Croft’s tomb-enshrouded traps, may I suggest giving your gray matter a Shank vacation? EA’s fun-as-all-hell, fifteen dollar DLC beat-’em-up, won’t tax your brain, but will blister your thumbs for a cathartic few hours of bad guy-slaughtering fun. Inspired by old school, side-scrolling brawlers, Shank blends criminally addictive gameplay with a beautifully animated 2D graphic novel-like presentation that cribs heavily from the films of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
As the titular blade-baring badass, players embark on a blood-soaked quest for revenge against some dudes that did you wrong. The minimalist story is told through beautiful cut scenes that look as though they just jumped off the paneled page. But trust me, you won’t be looking for narrative depth once the crimson life-juice starts spilling. From start to finish, Shank’s a gore-fueled romp that will have you shooting, disemboweling, choking, and eviscerating swarms of foes in a variety of exaggerated ways. While carving up goons for four-plus hours might sound like a recipe for button-mashing boredom, Shank’s style and smooth controls keep you giddily engaged throughout.
CAST OF CRAZIES
Rather than unleashing your frustrations on a line-up of look-alike bad guys, Shank spits out a diverse cast of grind house-inspired psychopaths. From Gatling gun-toting goons in sharp suits and katana-wielding hotties, to wife beater-wearing thugs and meat bags in Mexican wrestling masks, Shank’s killers could have strolled off the sets of Kill Bill, Desperado and From Dusk till Dawn. These crazies only represent the low- to mid-level bullet and blade fodder keeping your trigger finger busy until you get to the truly bizarre boss encounters. I won’t spoil all the fun for you, but be prepared to take on an S&M freak--complete with sex slave--that makes Pulp Fiction’s “The Gimp” look like suitable babysitter material.
Just as cool as the crazy-ass cast is how you choose to deliver them to death‘s door. Fueled by over-the-top animations, Shank takes out the trash with a variety of skills, attacks, and weapons. In addition to his default rusty blade, he always brings a gun and an up-close killer to a fight. My favorite pairing is the double machetes and shotgun, but your thirst for blood may be satiated by, say, a cocktail of dual-packed Uzis and a chainsaw. But whether feeding someone a grenade, ventilating their chest with a shotgun blast, or rearranging their intestines with a katana, you can always count on Shank to siphon life with style to spare.
Complementing Shank’s stylized thrill-kill spree are intuitive controls, allowing you to switch weapons on the fly, perform some light platforming, and utilize pouncing and grappling moves with incredible ease. Somehow Klei has managed to use pretty much every button on the controller, yet keep the controls accessible. While hammering on the attack buttons will carry you through all but the boss battles, this fluid gamepad navigation encourages further experimentation.
MURDER WITH A FRIEND
When not painting Shank’s environments--which include sun-baked deserts and neon-infused red-light districts--in blood by yourself, you can recruit a revenge-seeking friend to help out. Co-op is local only, but effective side-by-side play totally evokes the forgotten appeal of being shoulder-to-shoulder with a buddy at a Double Dragon or Bad Dudes arcade cabinet. Still, the lack of online co-op, as well as the repetitive-by-nature gameplay, may turn some players off. However, those with an undying hunger to take on waves of murdering psychotics in a stylish side-scrolling brawler, will love digging their blades into this fresh take on the classic genre.

I have to agree with 123four. This has been a great year for arcade downloads!! I just re-downloaded Trials HD. Some of the new purchases I made was Limbo, Monday Night Combat, Samurai Dish Washer(great game), and now Shank!!! I think the only new release I bought this year was Halo Reach. No you're not getting the same level of detail or in depth story from a major release. But with a good arcade title you're getting a really fun and simple game, and sometimes that's all you need to get that gaming fix!!

@indignant23- Maybe you should play the whole game first. The demo is just that a demo. The game has repetitive action, but what 2-D side scroller doesn't have repetitive action?? Even the great Mario Bros. had you jumping on the same goomba, shell, and occasional giant bullet throughout the whole game. As for the storyline, how much depth were you looking for in a 15 dollar arcade game?? IF you hadn't noticed the game was somewhat of a tribute to all of the ultraviolent slasher flick we see from 80's and early 90's. The classic story of revenge, what more do you need to set the tone of the game you're about to play?? The complaint of no Online co-op is weak. Because even if it was online, you're still only getting one other person to play the game with you. Why does all games have to offer online co-op in order for it to be fun and enjoyable?? Boss Battles is anything but button mashing. Since with every boss battle you have to find the boss's weakness in order to win, or else the battle will take forever and you will find yourself playing that boss over and over again.
Everything you cited as a con, are all things that are easy fixes while you play the game. Too many cutscenes?? Just press X to skip it. No on-line?? Get a friend to play the game with you. As for the repetitive action and Boss Battles. Play the full game, and you'll find that the more you mix and match your weapons, the bigger your combos become. Besides that it's a hack and slash game!!
Bottom line for 15 bucks, you're getting a quality game, for a fraction of what you will pay for some of the shovelware thats out now at full price. I really don't know what people are expecting from a 15 dollar arcade game??

Played the demo the other day twice, and have to agree on some points but not on others:
The Good:
1. Great visuals / animation / style
2. Seamless fighting / fun intuitive combos with some cool finishing moves
3. good variety of weapons
The Bad:
1. Action was already repetitive in the one level i played through
2. Boss battles end up being button mashing for 5 mins as heavily one sided
3. Story line could not be more linear: Bad guy kills girl - find and kill bad guy
4. No online coop play
5. Lot of cut scenes to 'tell the story' are long and sometimes unnecessary
6. Game is short - approx 3 hours
Bottom Line: More cons than pros....maybe something to pass the time as its only $15 but with lots of other top quality games coming out/recently released, Im not sold.

I had a chance to talk to some of the Klei developers(who brought you N+, eets, and Sugar Rush) this year at PAX Prime and I have to say, this is a great game. Klei Entertainment burned through the development of Shank in roughly a year and a half, which in my eyes is amazing when compared to some of the crap on XBL. It's 1200 MSPs, which some may see as expensive for a 3~6 hour game, but I had so much fun playing it I would have no problem dishing that out for Shank. The fantastic art style definitely reminded me of a blood drenched Tarantino film. The movement and controls in Shank were very seamless, from the wall running/climbing to the cross-body pistol shooting. The grappling attacks were great, oh god the thrill of shoving a grenade down some thugs throat... *Sigh*
I've very excited to see more from Klei Entertainment and thanks to the fun I had with Shank, I will definitely go back to play Sugar Rush and eets for the first time.

Although the game enjoys a stunning visual flair, it feels like a poor-man's Castle Crashers which has so much more diversity and replayability. The bosses are also unbalanced when compared to the rest of the action, taking way too much repetition to beat. However I'm sure Shank 2 will be great!

Has anyone else noticed the sudden blooming of great downloadable games? I think we are truly in the golden age, friends

I got this game the day it came out and have been having a blast playing it. And as it was stated before the only problem I have is no online co-op. Other than that this game is great and is one of the best downloadable side scrolling games that i've ever played. And does anyone else who've played this can't help but think what if Robert Rodriguez adapted a movie out of this?
Jlost18
I got the game last night and it is awesome, the only problem with the game is that the co-op is local only it would be cool to play online with it.
Nemesisx666x
if it had online co-op I would've gotten it...the demo is brutally awesome but I wouldn't want to spend $15 for a supposedly 3 hour SP game... ITS ALL ABOUT "REPLAYABILITY" for me..If I was a "BALLA" so they call it, this game would be downloaded without hesitation!
Wozman23
Played the demo last night. Loved the look of the game and the combat was a fun and varied. Definitely picking it up tonight and jumping into some local co-op.

I've found myself somewhat disappointed by the game, but then I'd been very excited about it for a long time. The presentation is wonderful, it feels like there are few sidescrollers out there with animation as lovely as that in Shank. The combat itself is really quite fun and relatively fluid (aside from some extended animations), but ultimately I'm finding the game is often more frustrating than fun. It's a mixed bag, which is a shame, because it feels like it really could have been outstanding.
At the very least I'm glad to have purchased it, if only to support Klei's title and a certain flair that I'd like to see more of.
Good review, even if it doesn't jive with my own impressions of the game. What does that bring us to now? 6 or 7 weeks straight of high quality downloadable releases? It's been pretty awesome.
iwould/doadam24/7
ign and gamespot both gave this game like a 6.5, according to them the game is 3 hours long, extremely repetative, and the controls don't work properly,so i can't help but wonder who's right.lollies!
