It’s the story of Noble Team, a squad of heroic Spartan soldiers, and their final stand on planet Reach, humanity’s last line of defense between the terrifying Covenant and Earth. This darker story is echoed by grittier visuals amid a backdrop of massive, awe-inspiring environments. X10 Report: Halo: Reach

By Andrew Pfister - Posted Feb 11, 2010

Nathan Fillion (Aka Buck) Could Return In Halo: Reach Next Year

What’s the status?

Fresh off of recent single-player reveals in American and European magazines, details about the “last” Halo game developed by Bungie are starting to trickle out. It was announced today that the multiplayer beta promised to purchasers of Halo 3: ODST is coming on May 3rd.

What we saw:

Bungie’s Brian Jarrard and Marcus Lehto were on hand to run us through a list of feature bullet points that were revealed in those magazine features. Namely:

  • The game is set in the year 2552 on the planet Reach, which as we all know by now, is completely and utterly doomed. This is the story of the events leading up to the Covenant’s victory which then sets off the chain of events in Halos 1 through 3.
  • You’re a fresh addition to a squad of Spartan-IIIs called Noble Team. If you’re not familiar with the Halo fiction, the Spartan-III is smaller and less adept than the Spartan-II (i.e. Master Chief), but that makes them easier and cheaper to train and “produce.”
  • As we find out, it also makes them more expendable. You’re replacing a team member that was recently killed, and you join 5 existing members, each of which has a combat specialty like sniper or heavy weapons.
  • Bungie is reintroducing the Covenant as a more mysterious and dangerous foe than what we’ve seen with wisecracking grunts. The familiar enemy races have been redesigned from head to toe, with a particular spotlight on the “new” Elite.
  • Equipment power-ups that were introduced in Halo 3 are gone, replaced by interchangeable armor enhancements. They only showed us a sprint ability, but we’re going to see a few more in the beta – they seem to be well aware that balancing these enhancements is a top priority.

In a strange case of “something old, something new,” Bungie has completely trashed or otherwise reworked their technological foundation, but everything they’re saying about their design approach indicates that they’re going back to what made the first Combat Evolved so special: wide-open areas for combat with flexible A.I. and a simple, yet deeply balanced weapon and gear system.

No Downloadable Content For Halo 3: ODST, Studio Focused On Halo: Reach

Unfortunately, they didn’t really show that off to us today, preferring instead to show us an internal documentary video (“vidoc,” as they call them) and then a quick flythrough of a map in the newly-Alpha build that will be included in this spring’s beta called “Power House.”  It was a small/medium-sized map set in a rocky hillside with dilapidated structures that apparently is best suited for arena-type skirmishes. There was nobody to skirmish against when Jarrard went into the actual HUD and first-person play, so he demonstrated the also-revamped sound system (those guns sound LOUD now), grenade explosions, and some pretty sparks generated by bullets hitting concrete.

Even if they didn’t show much in the way of exciting gameplay, the words they’re using to describe this first/last Halo adventure are what I want to hear. My excitement can be best summed up by a quote from composer Marty O’Donnell in the vidoc: “This is the definitive Halo made by the people who created Halo.”

i have been off the halo bandwagon for awhile. when i first saw the first trailer, i wasnt very impressed. but the vidoc put more things into perspective. i really hope bungie makes this the very game to bring me back into the franchise.

I am happy to see that Bungie seems to be trying to make this a truly good game. I don't dislike any of the Halo games and I'm not saying this has been done before, but I hope this doesn't turn out to be a money mill for Bungie. I only say this because I can see that Bungie certainly has the opportunity to do such a thing, however I hope they don't. The video seems like they threw in a lot of words to grab the attention of people who may not know much about games. So it's hard to tell now if they will actually make a great and different experience like they say they will or if they are just trying to sell more by saying that they will.

THIS is the Halo I have been waiting for!
The polygons and amount of graphics they are working with FINALLY set the true innovative Halo standard in my opinion.
We have new weapons, the original halo theme, big war battles; really what more could you want from a Halo game? Say goodbye to mediocre Halo 3 WHEW!

Halo has been a dominating game ever since xbox came out, it's the best selling xbox games ever. Today call of duty modern warfare 2 is the top game, maybe mag but i'm not positive, fall 2010 will be the time reach will dominate over any shooter this year and maybe years to come. May 3rd is going to be a good day for halo fans. also sprinting will be awesome that's the only reason i got hooked on cod games and gears of war. Maybe bungie and 343 finally noticed the problem with walking, reach 5/5 stars for me even though it didn't come out yet cause i know it will be rated 5 stars by g4tv.

I was in Taiwan in 2002...all those guys were shacked up in Internet cafe's smoking cigarettes playing Counterstrike!!!..It was nutz. I bought an XBOX there to kill time and a rack of games. Hlo was one of them. I was so busy with Marvel v Capcom 2, NFS Hot Pursuit, and Metal Gear, I didn't even touch HAL CE until I was back in the States. It was midnight and I was working part time and didn't have to get up in the morning. I put that sucker in and played it until 3 am. The narrative is what really pulled me in. Freak all you Halo haters...this game is bigger than the genre or your friggin Ipods...it provides a unique narrative experience.

I do like a few things,
    1.Aliens not speaking perfect English
2.Customizable armor and skills (finally Halo goes Freeform)
3.The guns look more older and bare-bones, more Aliens and less Star Trek
    4.Elites are back (Yes!)
    5.New game engine

Halo haters get ready to eat your own dumbass words. Halo Reach is gonna be GOTY contender for sure. Im anxious to see what other armor upgrades they are going to have. I know camo is one of them.. And what can I say!?! Finally Bungie adopts a sprint mechanic! Thanx! only three games too late, lol

Halo reach is going to be better than anything sony will ever have to offer and people willing to go out of your way to diss reach probably have nothing better to do because there isnt any games to play on the gaystation i mean i guess you can watch heavyrain or pretend that mag is worth the price of a full game. 2010 is the year of xbox with reach, fable 3, mass effect 2 and so on

    I really do hope that this game has a lot features to its multiplayer as well as a great campaign mode. Halo 3's singleplayer mode was rather disappointing and its multiplayer just didn't seem fun to me. I'm not too familiar with Halo 3's playlists because I haven't played since the release. But I hope some of these features and playlists are in the game;

    Single Player:
    10+ hour Campaign Mode
    Great friendly AI
    Better rewards from Skulls

    Multiplayer:
Sprint (Thank God it's been confirmed)
    Unlockable Weapons/Attachments/Armor
    Playable different races
Kill steak rewards (Ring activation after so many kills would be pretty sweet)
    New Vehicles
    Classes
