Nathan Fillion (Aka Buck) Could Return In Halo: Reach Next Year

What’s the status?

Fresh off of recent single-player reveals in American and European magazines, details about the “last” Halo game developed by Bungie are starting to trickle out. It was announced today that the multiplayer beta promised to purchasers of Halo 3: ODST is coming on May 3rd.

What we saw:

Bungie’s Brian Jarrard and Marcus Lehto were on hand to run us through a list of feature bullet points that were revealed in those magazine features. Namely:

  • The game is set in the year 2552 on the planet Reach, which as we all know by now, is completely and utterly doomed. This is the story of the events leading up to the Covenant’s victory which then sets off the chain of events in Halos 1 through 3.
  • You’re a fresh addition to a squad of Spartan-IIIs called Noble Team. If you’re not familiar with the Halo fiction, the Spartan-III is smaller and less adept than the Spartan-II (i.e. Master Chief), but that makes them easier and cheaper to train and “produce.”
  • As we find out, it also makes them more expendable. You’re replacing a team member that was recently killed, and you join 5 existing members, each of which has a combat specialty like sniper or heavy weapons.
  • Bungie is reintroducing the Covenant as a more mysterious and dangerous foe than what we’ve seen with wisecracking grunts. The familiar enemy races have been redesigned from head to toe, with a particular spotlight on the “new” Elite.
  • Equipment power-ups that were introduced in Halo 3 are gone, replaced by interchangeable armor enhancements. They only showed us a sprint ability, but we’re going to see a few more in the beta – they seem to be well aware that balancing these enhancements is a top priority.

In a strange case of “something old, something new,” Bungie has completely trashed or otherwise reworked their technological foundation, but everything they’re saying about their design approach indicates that they’re going back to what made the first Combat Evolved so special: wide-open areas for combat with flexible A.I. and a simple, yet deeply balanced weapon and gear system.

No Downloadable Content For Halo 3: ODST, Studio Focused On Halo: Reach

Unfortunately, they didn’t really show that off to us today, preferring instead to show us an internal documentary video (“vidoc,” as they call them) and then a quick flythrough of a map in the newly-Alpha build that will be included in this spring’s beta called “Power House.”  It was a small/medium-sized map set in a rocky hillside with dilapidated structures that apparently is best suited for arena-type skirmishes. There was nobody to skirmish against when Jarrard went into the actual HUD and first-person play, so he demonstrated the also-revamped sound system (those guns sound LOUD now), grenade explosions, and some pretty sparks generated by bullets hitting concrete.

Even if they didn’t show much in the way of exciting gameplay, the words they’re using to describe this first/last Halo adventure are what I want to hear. My excitement can be best summed up by a quote from composer Marty O’Donnell in the vidoc: “This is the definitive Halo made by the people who created Halo.”

I think that reach is going to be great and most likely the best of the series. I think is is great how they are including the old parts of Halo CE while also including the new parts of it in a way that is not strange. The only thing that I do not like is the design of the AR I think that even though it is in more detail then the other ones it just looks to fake and it also looks like it is a bad combination of a current day gun and a regular AR. Other then that I think that it is going to be the game of the year and that it might even beat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in over all number bought.
Halo For life lol : )

Reach is gonna be 2010 GOTY and then you PS3 fanbiys will have nothing to compete with it. Lets not forget Mass Effect 2, Fable 3, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell Conviction and possible Gears of War 3 all ONLY ON 360 that are fighting for GOTY. Ahhh feels good to have bought a 360...

With the extra detail made to the visuals, I'm interested to see how smooth the gameplay will be.

Has anyone heard whether there are going to be new vehicles? I mean i've heard there are going to be civilian vehicles you can drive but what about like combat vehicles? Like in Halo Wars there were Grimlons and Grizzlies, Vultures, and Cyclops and things like that!!!! Does anyone here know if those will be a part in this game? I would really enjoy the Elephant playin a major role in this game!!!!

Finally, I found HALO again! I wondered where the original game went... I tried looking through the Covenant storyline and all of the politics that came with it, but all I found was the plot to Halo2. It frustrated me that Bungie went a little Hollywood on us in the second game, and they continued that trend via Halo3, but I forgave them when they spit-shined the multiplayer.
Now that I have seen the screenshots and vidocs from Bungie's work on Halo: Reach, I can't stand the fact that I have to wait until the fall! Open-map battles, including the ability to watch as yet another Covenant dropship brings a platoon of baddies down on your position; in-depth armor/weapon systems, which the inclusion of a n00b-tube should make for interesting multiplayer; and the return of our all-time favorite faceless soldier, John aka Spartan-117, although you're not the Master Chief just yet, this time around you're as faceless and unimportant as the first time you clamored out of that popsicle tube on the pillar.
This game is going to be the brilliant culmination of all the Halo games created, including Halo Wars. It will finally have everything that made the first HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED great, including some things that it didn't! Cannot wait for this game to drop cause I'm getting in line now! Wonder what the weather will be like during the fall this year here in Washington..?

Looks awesome but I hope it doesn't turn into another HALO ODST I had like 50 of them returned in a couple of weeks back to my store because it was just to short of a game.

If Bungie was a publicly traded company, I'd be buying their stock right now. C'mon Bungie, give us an IPO before Reach so we can all share in your success.
I dig all things Halo and am very much looking forward to Reach.

um... how about they change the assault rifle clip back to 50 like Halo: CE... if they are creating it to be more like the first game....

Halo 1, awesome. Halo 2... pretty awesome. Halo 3 I completely lost interest in everything, never finished it, tried ODST, and it still sucked.

I know there are a TON of people that like the series, but prequels just aren't doing for me anymore. It's over used, and less inspired. Why can't anybody tell a story from the REAL beginning to the end anymore instead of coming into it half-way through and back pedaling over and over?

Right now, if you're looking for a good multi-player FPS, play MW2. If you're looking for a good campaign, then play Fallout 3. This video is WAY over hyped, but despite everything I just said, I'm interested to see what this new game has to offer and I'll definitely keep my eye on it.

If it turns out to be as good as they claim, who knows, I might once again be a Halo player, but I'm not holding my breath. I can only hope they make it a lil' more hardcore... Halo 3 is for kiddies.
