Battlefield 3 "Close Quarters" DLC Hands-on Impressions -- Goodbye Deposit

By Rob Manuel - Posted Mar 13, 2012

Battlefield 3's upcoming Close Quarter DLC does exactly as it implies, brings the action incredibly close no matter where you go. During EA's GDC 2012 press event, I got my hands on Ziba Tower, a posh little area on the upper-westside decorated with every page from the Ikea catalog. After we were done with it, there was no way they were getting their deposit back.

The new map, one of four shipping with the new download, breaks down into two identical apartments with a small bungalow in between them on the roof of a rather extravagant building. When first spawning into the area, you notice all the little things that seem to get in your way: decorative wooden walls, bits of furniture, and waste high walls. In other words, keep your sniper guns at home, folks. The team over at DICE designed a markmen’s nightmare by putting nearly everything you can think of in the way of a clear shot. Sometimes you need to make your own opening with a handy shotgun.

Unlike larger maps, you really get a sense of destruction very quickly in Ziba Tower as you break through glass and smash tables just to move around. Battles move quickly from the small open areas between the buildings to the long hallways as walls give way to hot lead and warm grenades. Moving between areas becomes less of a liability as the cloth awning provides just enough cover to sneak you over to the other side. Gameplay seems more intent to keep you moving than hiding in the shadows.

Battlefield 3

Close Quarters takes advantage of Battlefield 3 destructible environments by putting you only inches away from exploding debris as you try to look for any sort of standing cover. Small areas funneled action in and around the courtyard and hallways since they seemed to be the only areas you could find any space between you and your target or pursuer.

I managed to escape with some dignity in tack as I carried my shotgun through the drywall gauntlet. By the time we were finished, you could look through every wall and not a single room stood without something broken or smoldering within it. Close Quarters focuses on quick action and combat as close as the muzzle of your gun.

Battlefield 3 Close Quarters DLC will be available in June, and be available a week early on PS3.

i'm cool with the new maps. adds more variety. i get to use my shotgun more. more BF3 maps is always good, but glad this is the only DLC with small maps. looking forward to the others, but this will quench my thirst for now.

I think those screenshots were simulated, I didn't see one person with the USAS and frag rounds.

Im not gonna lie, i was strictly a call of duty guy, but to be honest this game is waaaaay better, ive only touched my MW3 (multiplayer sucks in mw3 by the way) a couple of times, but when it comes to BF3, i cant stop coming back for more. I cant wait for the new BF3 expansion.

I think these maps are great and all, but not really what everyone in the bf community wants. Alot of bf3 players are quite annoyed of the call of duty crowd coming into the game and not using teammwork and trying to run and gun.
I feel like these maps are just going to add to that fact even more. I know theyre making smaller maps for quicker actions and they can better show off the capablities of the frostbite 2 engine in a small space. But i just think more people would want the armored kill DLC coming out next winter to come first. Big maps, more vehicles and weapons. It just seems like it would appeal to a larger crowd.

ignoring the first comment. I like the idea of single map dlc if they could just make it the right price I would be in

Why does every link to a multiplatform game always lead to the XBOX 360 page for the game :(
