Just Cause 2 gives you free reign over an insanely massive landscape and lets you engage in one outrageous action sequence after another as you attempt to overthrow a corrupt government. But does it overcome the issues of its predecessor and reach that upper echelon of truly great open-world games?
The Pros
- An incomprehensibly expansive game world
- Hundreds of varied missions and locations
- Grapple + parachute = one of the coolest game mechanics ever
The Cons
- Generic and forgettable story
- Factions are indistinguishable
- Poor vehicle handling
In Just Cause 2, Avalanche Studios has created one of the most expansive sandbox worlds seen thus far in a video game. Base-jumping from the top of a snowcapped mountain and gliding to rest on a sunny beach is something that truly needs to be seen to be believed. Sadly, the war-torn nation of Panau doesn’t receive the kind of narrative support that makes other open-world games like Grand Theft Auto more than just a giant tech demo. You’ll have fun for sure, but in the end, you’ll most likely be left wondering what it was all for.

Jumping Off Point
The story of Just Cause 2, like its predecessor, is as generic and forgettable as they come. Series protagonist Rico Rodriguez returns to action after his boss, Tom Sheldon, goes rogue somewhere on the fictional island nation of Panau in Southeast Asia. An evil dictator named Pandak Panay (think Kim Jong-ill without the style) has taken control of the country, and is being threatened by three warring factions: the Roaches, the Ular Boys and the Reapers. While each faction has its own reason for wanting to bring down Panay’s oppressive regime, in practice, all three adhere to the exact same strategies when it comes to putting those anti-government ideologies into practice.
Considering how much of the game is spent in the employ of these factions (there are only seven story missions, every other one is faction-related), it ’d be great if each one had a distinct mission type. While the missions themselves are somewhat varied, it’s easy to forget who you are working for at any given time, because after a while, it all starts blending together. Even something as simple as “Group X favors theft missions, Group Y likes to blow stuff up and Group Z likes to overthrown military bases” would work, because it would distinguish your assignments and give each group its own tactical identity.
However, what the missions lack in uniqueness they make up for in quantity, as there are hundreds of them to undertake, and even more locations to discover, each one with various items and acts of chaos to complete. Chaos is what drives the story forward, so blowing up government installations (tankers, radar dishes, gas stations, etc.) raises the chaos meter, and once it’s high enough, an agency mission unlocks. There are only seven story missions in the game, but it takes around 90,000 chaos points or so to unlock them, so the majority of your time (in my case just over 15 hours) will be spent doing faction missions and wreaking generalized havoc. I played through it fairly linearly, and by the end of the game I had unlocked 28 percent of the overall game. So there’s no shortage of side content to take in.
The Truth is in the Grapple
Yes, unfortunately, the story and characters in Just Cause 2 are forgettable and bland. However, the game delivers in the one area that it matters most, the gameplay. The action is over-the-top and out of control in every way imaginable, and it makes for exceptional fun. And while you have access to all manner of weaponry and rocket mounted helicopters, the real stars of the show are the grapple hook and parachute. The grapple hook behaves much like what you might’ve seen in Batman: Arkham Asylum, only instead of attaching to gargoyles and specific ledges, you can attach to any surface in the game (airplanes, trees, boxes, etct.). It can also be used to tether enemies to combustible canisters, attach cars to the road, or pull yourself to helicopters, which you can then hijack. But in the heat of battle, it’s not the most practical weapon.

When used in tandem with your parachute, the grapple hook offers you a quick and effective vehicle for traversing the expansive game map. Why drive around a mountain when you can just grapple/parachute your way up and over it? In fact, the combination is so effective that once you get the hang of it, you’ll most likely avoid using terrestrial vehicles altogether. Helping with this decision is the fact that the vehicle handling is across-the-board terrible, thanks in large part to the slight delay between button input and onscreen action, which makes driving and flying one big exercise in overcompensation.
Thankfully, the grapple/parachute is one of the coolest game mechanics seen in some time, and it adds a wonderfully unique layer to the otherwise straightforward gunplay. There’s an adjustment period, but a good chunk of the beginning of the game is spent using it almost exclusively, since you don’t unlock the ability to fast travel to locations until a few hours into the game -- maybe longer, depending on how much time you spend off the beaten path. Fast travel is definitely necessary in a game this large, but you can only use it to travel to places you’ve already discovered. So even after you unlock the option to fast travel, you’ll still find yourself trekking for several minutes just to get to your desired destination.

I Wanna… I Wanna Big One!
At first glance, the grapple/parachute and the stunt-focused gameplay are the strongest points of Just Cause 2, but that’s doing a disservice to the real marquee act of this game, Panau itself. It’s easily the biggest game world I’ve ever encountered, and that’s not just longitudinally. Standing atop the game’s highest mountain peak and gazing down at the sprawling landscape beneath is jaw dropping. I actually timed it, and it took six and a half minutes in one of the game’s fastest planes to fly from one side of the map to the other (around 37 kilometers, or 23 miles). It’s a staggering achievement, and affords players with a virtually limitless playground for mayhem. From sunny beaches, to blistering hot deserts to frozen mountain peaks, Panau is an absolute stunner from top to bottom.
A Pretty Just Cause
Just Cause 2 manages to deliver high-octant thrills and spills on a mind-blowing scale. It won’t be remembered for its contributions to great storytelling, the vehicle controls are a bit unruly, and the factions tend to blend into each other, but in the balls-out action department, it does its job and does it well. It also introduces us to the real transportation method of the future: a grappling hook and parachute. What’s an electric car again?

It is mid 2011.. I picked this game up about 2 months ago at Goodwill for $3 on the PC.... I am loving this game. I'm at %36 completion and I haven't done hardly any missions. I'm having to much fun going around capping villages and bases..
If you still haven't played this game, you really need to. Good luck finding it for $3 like I did. Oh and play the pc version if you have a high end gaming pc. I run this game maxed out with all the extra's on and it looks amazing. Much better than anything the ps3 or xbox360 could do.

Funny how so many don't seem to get the point of the JC games, the story/characters/missions are only there JUST beCAUSE they need to be, it's in the fricken title (it has a double meaning though), the entire heart and soul of the two games is to just mess around in the world.
Havn't we all spent endless hours in the GTA games just running around blowing stuff up and going on killing sprees purely for the fun of it? This game takes that aspect to a whole new level, and really puts GTA and all other open world games to shame in that sense.

For all those with an Uncharted 2 hangover, this is the game for you. For all the games Xplay gave mostly to highly positive feedback, this one is the last one of the many great titles of 2010 I haven`t gotten too and it sure has all the goods. The tech is so great with not just this bad boy but with so many open world shooters, if you have a half way decent venue and sound to back it up, who needs to go to the movies when you can be the protagonist in the comfort of your own home. Also, Kudos to the developers to make third person action so much fun in this and having chaos as the mainstay to advancing not only the story but upgrading Rico`s arsenal as well. They packed so much content in this I couldn`t believe when I saved my game after a few hours that I had only completed a whopping 5% of the game. Great experience Eidos and a fun way to get away from V.A.T.S. mode in Fallout.

I've heard the story multiple times, so it is a bit cliche. The gameplay is amazing and the sheer size of Panau is something that should be appreciated. I liked how well the physics engine worked, you want it to work really well if you're taking down a radio tower. Rico felt like a mishmash of a endless stream of action heroes, I did like how he is hispanic because you often don't see hispanics portrayed positively.

I love this game , best sandbox ever... period . the best part was jumpin out of a jet at 10000 feet and then grappling to a chopper , but the story kinda sucks

So you guys make no mention of the wretched voice acting?

game is fun i have to admit..played around 20hrs..my quams about the game is the lack of copters/planes, the crappy driving mechanics, and grappling hook even gets kinda boring after awhile..with the creativity would be nice to grapple two objects to something..would make for a whole other experience..the equipment/car drops seem kinda lame after playing mercenaries bc you actually see the items being deliverd in real time..not a cutscene..would make for a super badass game if they combined jc and mercenaries..should be able to call in some kind of air support or other help for the bases/missions..overall in my opinion the game has great "fun" factor but gets repetitive as it seems most sandbox games do{i guess any game for that matter if you wear it out)..need to create a game to where u are 'always upgrading' or discovering new stuff or moves or keep the addons coming...id buy it if price dropped to about 25bucks..3 outta 5 for funfactor alone..could be better could be worse

Totally going to get it, but going to wait till price goes down. To much going on. Also, only had trouble with land vehicles, but not much. Grapple between things breaks too much. Jumping from high places + infinite parachute = take THAT science!

I liked the review, but a lot of the elements on this game reminds me alot of some of the things I've experienced in Mercinaries 2, and Prototype surprisingly enough. The grappling hook and the ablity to steal vehicles in mid air was something I could do in Prototype. While the landscaping reminds me a lot of Mercenaries 2. Both of those games were great in my opinion, so if Just Cause 2 reminds me of those two games, then I guess it's not so bad after all. But the first Just Cause left such a bad taste in my mouth, I think I'm still gonna hold out until the price drops, and I can buy it for at least 39.99!!
FreezeFrame
HELP!!!!I just bought the game yesterday and (i dont know if it is just my copy of the game) the audio is off. Their mouths keep moving but no words come out (it is like waching the godzilla movie but in english) Please say if your having the same problem or if it is just my copy. Thank You.

Maybe it's because it's only the demo I'm playing, but besides using the grappling hook/parachute combo and throwing grenades at things to blow them up, I don't see a whole lot to do. I mean, feel free to thumbs down my comment as it may be because I haven't explored enough. Of course, it's hard to do so when the demo is timed.

4/5 on this garbage? G4 is full of cramp!!!lol

Impressions
When the first Just Cause was released, I knew nothing about the game. One day I was told about it by a friend, so I went to a local used games dealer and bought it for about $14. After playing it for about a week, I decided that I really didn t like it. There were several reasons:
*Although large, it was a bland landscape.
*Rico was disproportionate, his arms looked longer than his legs.
*The overall graphics were outdated.
At the end of the week, I eventually took the game back and exchanged it for another.
When I heard about Just Cause 2, I was curious as to how much more advanced it would be over it s predecessor. After watching several videos and reading several articles by Avalanche Studios, I realized that this game would be one that would satisfy my sandbox needs. I stayed up to date with every new video for months all the way up to the release of Just Cause 2.
Just Cause and Effect
It is now March 25, 2010, I have played the game for two days now. I can t even begin to tell you how impressed I am with the game. Let s start with one of the best ideas in gaming history the parachute/grappling hook combination! This is the most fun I have had ever with an open world game. Once I got the hang of controlling Rico with his parachute I was hooked, which brings me to the second part the grappling hook. Using the grappling hook with Rico is like James Bond and his Walther PPK, they are meant to be together.
Panau is a beautiful place with a lot of diversity. I am still learning my way around (which is fun in itself). One aspect of the game so far, that I would change, would be the civilian population. I visited Panau city earlier today, and noticed that the streets were bare. It seems like there are more civilians in the villages than there are in the city. That may change as I progress, but for now that is one of my few complaints. Also, Panau is such a huge place, I would like to be able to save my location so that when I pick it up again, I start out where I left off. I noticed this after completing a few missions for the Roaches. I decided to do some exploring and started out in Panau City and flew over to the desert area of the map. Well something came up and I saved my game and picked it up about two hours later. When I started the game back up I was back in the city. I was a little upset because I bought a plane off the black market to get to the desert, and now my plane is gone, my money is gone, and I am back in the city.
I enjoy the fact that the whole map is opened up from the start. GTA was short on this idea by making you do missions before you opened up areas of the map. The sound effects are very impressive and the music sets the game apart from other games that use generic video game music. The vehicles are great, however the handling is something to get used to. I noticed myself crashing and rolling off of cliffs, when I should have made that curve.
The stunt system is another good reason to buy this game. Jumping from one motorcycle to another in mid pursuit is very fun. All in all Just Cause 2 deserves a spot in every gamers library and what Avalanche Studios created is something for the books.

This game is amazing. It's the most beautiful game ever and a lot of fun. I love it and I will soak it in. It's a major upgrade from the first one. The vehicles do handle better. Storyline isn't bad, I like being a spook. Cool game ya have to buy it. Beats all the earlier open world games.
PrometheanArsonist
Just Cause 2 allowed me to do the coolest thing I've ever done in a video game: stole a helicopter right out of a military base, hijacked a pursuing helicopter in midair, took it straight up for about five minutes until I was well above the cloud layer, jumped out with a parachute, and then attempted to save the plummeting chopper by catching up to it via three minutes of velocity-controllable free fall.

man... i be hating the no video reviews... we had a choice before... why must we endure the pain of words and letters and it's "quotable" sentences... x(
