X10 Report: Alan Wake
By Andrew Pfister - Posted Feb 17, 2010
What’s the status?
Alan Wake is the six-years-in-the-making adventure game from Remedy Entertainment, the guys who you might remember did the Max Payne games. The last time I saw Alan Wake was the new footage that emerged from last year’s E3...and before that, it was at X06 in Barcelona (four years ago!)
I’ve been working under the impression that Alan Wake was going to be a slower, methodical game of investigation and examining environments (a la Alone in the Dark or Silent Hill). But based on what they showed us at X10 last week, that’s not entirely the case...
What did we see?
My playable demo began at the beginning of the game, with Alan regaining consciousness and discovering that he was just in a rather wicked car accident in the forested, moonlit mountains. His beloved Alice is nowhere to be found and he doesn’t seem to have a recollection of how he got to this point. He spots a gas station down in the distance, but of course, getting there won’t happen on a straight line. The atmospheric moonlight and fog effects were laid on thick, in an-almost exaggerated manner for effect, and it evoked fond memories of my favorite X-Files episode (the one in the Pacific Northwest where the killer bugs came out after sunset). Between the dark outdoor environments and excellent audio, Remedy has definitely succeeded in creating that spooky vibe.

As I (as Alan) made my way through the linear, pre-destined path through the forest and vacant logging facility, I started to get a taste of what Alan Wake really is: a 3D action game in the vein of modern Resident Evil. Or to put it bluntly, I was shooting and reloading guns much more often than I thought I would be. And not just reloading cartridges, but also battery flashlights. The flashlight works in tandem with your firearms, in that the "Taken" (your possessed-by-something foes) are extremely sensitive to light. After sufficient exposure to your high beam, they’ll be stunned and ready to absorb your gunfire.
Light comes into play in other clever ways: you’ll use it to create temporary "safe" zones (part of the demo included a stand-off on an abandoned music stage, with you hopping from spotlight to spotlight while fending off an angry horde of Taken), and weapons like the flare gun and flashbang grenade are more useful than they would be in other games, thanks to their light-generating properties. At one point, you’ll even be tasked with using a spotlight as a powerful beam weapon.

Quite a bit of mystery is being set up early in the game. Helpful yellow scribblings are found in the environment - visible only when a flashlight shines upon them - and point you to supply caches or give vague warnings of doom (long lost cousins from Rapture, perhaps?). Alan will find pages of his manuscript-in-progress lying about, and his words - that he doesn’t remember writing - will prophecy what’s about to come. I also heard a brief radio snippet from the local airwaves that revealed some truly Art Bell "Coast to Coast" stuff is going down.
It’s easy to be skeptical after six years of prolonged and mostly-quiet development, and I still have reservations about the episodic structure and Alan-as-narrator presentation, but everything else about the game is right up my alley. This one is just asking for a dark room, loud speakers, and a cool, unnerving breeze through the window.

I think there pushing the 360 power with this game watch the video on HD plus stop comparing Alan wake and heavy rain they are both different games only little the same

why are people saying that this is microsoft answer to heavy rain? first of all they are 2 completely different games. second of all why does Microsoft need an answer to sony's metacritic AA-rated exclusive?

ooooooooooooo xbox game suddenly before PS3s release of God of War 3, which will be the worlds most anticipated game ever, has been released. Well even though my PS3 has been unfortunately been struck with the unfortunate YLOD (yellow light of death) I can't wait to play this game (GOW3) which is the years most anticipated game of all time allen wake seams like another whatever release game and xplay being more implored to the xbox community than everything else i will say that GOW3 will completely deter them from thinking that PS3 has been making other than incompetent games. And have improved their game making abilities.

i think when developers say that they've been making games for six years, that really means that they wasted most of it chasing one idea, and then mid development they chose to go in a different direction

I have read most of the popular gaming blogs on this topic and not one is mentioning the way this game is "EPISODIC" and has a "previously on Alan Wake" which is exactly what the recent Alone in the Dark game did which was different but the game was terrible. Are the folks at Remedy the same developers of that mess?! No they are not but they are also not bringing anything new to the table. Remedy we have played that game with it's "innovative" storytelling and it's "unique" controls! Oh how quick we forget!

why does m$ even need an answer to heavy rain?

@ez0038 im sorry to see you feel that way...regardless if alan wake is good or bad its apparent that you have tunnel vision for games to call heavy rain stupid. has it ever occured that games dont have to be unoriginal mind messes with the odd gun shot at a random creatures in the dark.
angryman038
This is not an MS answer to heavy rain. This will be an actual great game and not a stupid 8hr QTE.

I still find it odd that they would make a game like this JUST for the 360. I also seriously doubt it'll sell well if it stays an XBox exclusive because this looks more like the type of game that would do really well on the PS3.

Hmmmm....A guy waking up after a mysterious accident and his loved one mysteriously disappeared, now where have I seen that before?
Ohh well. I guess it'll come to me at some point.

@Zizen
How is it a counter, if its been in development longer than Heavy Rain? Besides, they're not anywhere near the same thing. Heavy Rain is a noir-esque, detective style interactive narrative. Alan Wake is a shoot-em up fantasy horror/thriller. Where's the correlation, apart from both being very moody?

Considering Remedy is not involved with Max Payne 3, I hope this game lives up.

I have already pre-oredered the limited edition!!

This game is shaping up well, as Pfister said it feels like an episode of the X-files, I hope it turns out nicely.

I have waited a long time for this. Now that they made it XBox only, I have zero interest. Very disappointed, no matter how it looks
pcNorth_mOnster
this makes me want an xbox so much if only i had the money but i would only use the xbox for games i cant play on my ps3 that way i can get the best games on both systems
MrSketchySketch
I for one can't wait for this game. Finally another creepy Silent Hill-esque game that doesn't suck (shattered memories...). Also, the concepts feel really cool, kinda like a Stephen King book. By the time this game comes out it will be about time for a break from ME2 and FFXIII anyway, lol.
spicypooptastic
What if this game becomes a hit and they just keep rolling out DLC episodes as in the videogame equivalent of lost. As in it gets people hook on the "what happens NEXT! feeling" and the story does not go anywhere that makes sense much like lost. And to people who are out of the Alan Wake loop will be like "what? this game makes no sense".
grunge sofa
Too bad they're trying SO hard. Its a little much.
But hey, it looks like Oregon!
peterIrishman24
for such a long development time this game better be good, and it definitely looks good so far
