PAX 2009: Contra Rebirth ImpressionsBy Patrick Klepek - Posted Sep 04, 2009
Contra, you're hard. But that's okay. Contra Rebirth, a brand-new Contra adventure ala Contra 4 on the DS, was on display at PAX 2009, finally bringing the news we've all been waiting for: confirmation Contra Rebirth is coming to America. Contra Rebirth is dropping on WiiWare next week and there's good reason to be looking forward to Konami's downloadable expansion of the Contra series.
Contra Rebirth is about what you'd expect -- and what you'd want -- from a new Contra. It's tough. I died a lot. I tried beating the centipede-esque boss a handful of times and eventually gave up in frustration. But that's what you expect when booting up a Contra game, so anything less wouldn't be faithful to what's kept the series alive in people's minds for this long.
If the PAX 2009 demo is anything to go by, however, Contra Rebirth will be easier than previous installments. There's less bullet hell (where enemy bullets swarm the entire screen) but plenty of cheap, out-of-your-control deaths (a Contra staple). Still, the sheer fact that I made it to the end of the first stage probably indicates the whole of Contra Rebirth has been designed for less hardcore-inclined to enjoy themselves. I don't have time to memorize bullet patterns anymore!
You won't have to wait long to see what I'm talking about, though. Konami is delivering Contra Rebirth onto WiiWare next week on September 7. Without having played more than the first stage -- and I'm not exactly a Contra expert -- I can't slap a full-on recommendation, but I can tell you I died plenty of times. That's Contra.
