E3 2010: Patapon 3 PreviewBy Sterling McGarvey - Posted Jun 21, 2010
What We Already Know
Patapon 3 was a quiet surprise on the E3 show floor. It’s the follow-up to Patapon 2, one of last year’s most popular PSP games.
What We’re Seeing Now
Not much, to be honest. In an ear-shattering environment like Sony’s E3 booth, it’s not exactly easy to keep all those “PATA” taps in sync with the ‘PON” taps. The only way I could maintain any time logged in during my minute or two of gameplay was to tap my own foot to the rhythm of the flashing light bar amidst all of the noise of game trailers, PlayStation ads, and gameplay demos going on around me. Fundamentally, however, the drum-based mechanics are still quite intact.
From what I’ve cribbed, the game’s events take place after Patapon 2, as the Patapon have finally crossed their constructed bridge and stumble upon evil spirits that turn the Patapon to stone, except for one, who finds a special amulet that turns him into a superhero. Feature-wise, you can expect to see 4-player online co-op with friends and competitive multiplayer against others.
But from what I briefly experienced, Patapon fans will be quite happy if they’ve cracked through both of the prior releases. You can expect to see this one show up this Fall.
