Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny Comic-Con 2009 Preview

Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny will be one of the best-looking games for the PSP when it's released. Of that, there is no doubt. But Soulcalibur has often flirted with guest characters, sometimes to cheers (Link), other times to frustration (Yoda). Kratos from God of War will be in the PSP iteration. The question: does it work?

Based on a few rounds with a playable Kratos at Comic-Con, it does. There's not much about Kratos that doesn't already seem to drop right in to the Soulcalibur universe (Voldo and Yoshimitsu have set the weirdo bar pretty high) and while Kratos looks a little angrier than everyone else, he's otherwise a natural fit.

Kratos works as a Soulcalibur character because the weapons lend themselves to a typical SC moveset seemingly without much effort. Kratos' primary weapons are the blades of chaos, with a few moves incorporating his trademark chains, too. One move even had Kratos sprouting wings and briefly shooting into the air.

Whether Kratos will hold up in serious competition (or if the PSP version is even able to stand up to that kind of hardcore scrutiny) isn't known, but based on my trial run with him, Soulcalibur fans shouldn't be upset that he's making an appearance.
