Dead Space Extraction - PS3

The limited edition of Dead Space 2 for the PS3 will include last year's Wii-only title Dead Space Extraction, fully optimized and upgraded for the PlayStation 3. That means HD, Trophy support, and the works. But if you don't want to pony up for that set, because you can also download it separate on the PlayStation Store. Either way, you're probably wondering, "Is it worth it?" Sony unveiled the Move controls for the game at the Tokyo Game Show, and we got to take a look. Read on to find out if you want to pick up the Dead Space Extraction experience.

The game certainly looks better than Extraction did on the Wii, and it's sharp enough so that it doesn't just feel like a simple port. They also boosted the audio to Dolby Surround Sound, which helps amp up the creepy factor when you start hearing sounds behind you. But, about those controls ... think House of the Dead meets Dead Space. It's definitely twitchy, and the Move controller is so sensitive that you'll see your cursor jittering all over the place. It doesn't use the Navigation Controller at all, since you're on rails, but otherwise the Move controller works just like the Wii-mote dide.

There's drop-in and drop-out co-op, and the game supports any combination of controls: two Moves, one Move and a SIXAXIS, a SIXAXIS and a DualShock and so on. Of course, you don't have to use the Move with it, but it definitely seemed to be much more accurate than the controller, even with the twitch factor, and the player with the Move looked like he was zeroing in on targets a lot faster. It's a pity that Sony didn't think to include a plastic Plasma Cutter peripheral with this game, because it would have made the shooting that much more fun.

Sony hasn't revealed the pricing for the downloadable version of Extraction, which might be deciding factor. The Limited Edition for the PS3 will be out in January for $59.99, and appears to be the only version available for pre-order right now, which makes you wonder if there will be a plain-jane version. If it's tossed in for free, why not? But if you're just wanting to give Extraction a whirl, wait until they reveal a price and then make a decision. My two cents is that if it's over $20, it's a bit too high. But you might find co-op alien blasting in space to be worth more than that. Choose accordingly.
