Starkiller (or his clone?) returns in the sequel to the smash hit Star Wars brawler. Boasting improved combat and beautiful visuals, The Force Unleashed II should live up to the promise of the flawed original. But all is not as it seems...
The Pros
- Much improved combat system and level design
- Top quality voice acting and the beginning of an interesting story
- Beautiful graphics and art design that capture the Star Wars look
The Cons
- Incredibly short
- Story is unfinished, ends in cliffhanger
- Some stuttering when lots of stuff is happening at once
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 Review:
It’s no secret that I was not a fan of the first Force Unleashed. As a tremendous Star Wars fan, I really wanted to like it, but instead found a clunky, buggy mess of a game that lacked in nearly all departments aside from storyline. It was tremendously successful, though, so LucasArts would have been well within its rights to simply make the same thing again without tweaking anything. Thankfully, this isn’t what happened, as Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II plays substantially better than its predecessor; however, something happened to make this sequel almost as unsatisfying as the first game.
Now there are two of them!
The Light Side ending of The Force Unleashed is taken as canon here, in which Starkiller sacrifices himself to delay the Emperor long enough to allow the fledgling Rebel Alliance to escape. Force Unleashed 2 begins with Vader training a clone of Starkiller (or is he?) but losing control over the situation. The clone can’t shake the memories of the original Starkiller, and breaks out of the facility on Kamino to escape and look for Juno Eclipse, the love interest from the first game.
“Will he finish what he begins?”
The strange thing about the story in this game is that it’s unfinished. Some would call it a cliffhanger, but it ends at a very awkward point that feels more like the end of Act 2 than anything else. The game is extremely short, and will take most about five hours to finish. If you could bypass the unskippable in-engine cutscenes, you could probably do it in four. As was the case in the first game, the story is interesting in places and opens up intriguing doors, but this time none of those interesting things are explored. Starkiller rages for the length of the game and has no real character arc, just the beginning of one. After my first play session I believed I was about a third of the way through the game due to the story progression, only to discover I was two-thirds done.
There’s an oddly abbreviated feel to much of the game’s presentation and narrative. The much-touted Yoda appearance and Dagobah level are merely a few throwaway lines and a cutscene with no actual substance. Early PR boasted of Boba Fett’s presence in the game, but he appears for a few seconds at most in cutscenes and you never interact with him. Slave One gets more screen time than Fett, in fact. Finally, the fact that the game ends on a cliffhanger is mind-boggling. Repeated rumors state that The Force Unleashed III may have been put on “indefinite hold,” meaning the end of this tale will either never be told or else we’ll be paying through the nose for DLC to see the end of a story we already paid $60 for.
Faster. More intense.
Thankfully, the actual gameplay is a vast improvement. The clunky and repetitive nature of the combat and enemy design is mostly gone now, replaced by smarter foes who fit better into the Star Wars canon. No more stormtroopers with magic anti-Force bubbles here, now you have Sith apprentices who are good at defending against Force attacks but are weak to your dual lightsabers. Other troopers have anti-saber staffs as seen in Episode III, and must be dealt with using the Force. The game does a good job of mixing and matching enemy types to force you into using your entire arsenal, something the first game was dismal at. It’s worth noting that the previously weak lightsaber is now much more powerful, and is able to remove enemies’ limbs and/or head. The trick is getting in close without being torn up by blaster fire. To the game’s credit, there is no “best” ability in The Force Unleashed II, and while it’s certainly not operating on the level of Bayonetta or Devil May Cry 3, it’s a solid brawler with good balance.
The controls are much the same but slightly more responsive, particularly the Force Grip. Targeting what you wanted to grab and what you wanted to subsequently throw the grabbed object at was a serious pain in the first game. It’s still not perfect, but you’ll likely get Starkiller to do what you want 90% of the time. Response time is still a bit lower than it should be thanks to a few overly elaborate animations, but the interface frustration is largely gone in Force Unleashed II.
Level design and pacing, two more big issues with the first title, are possibly the most improved things here. Levels are expansive but don’t get dull, and a handful of boss battles break up the action right when it needs variety. Due to the short length of the game, you only go through three environments (four counting the ultra-brief Dagobah stage), and I definitely wish there had been more. Quality trumps quantity, I suppose.
Impossible, even for a computer
Euphoria and Digital Molecular Matter are used to good effect, boasting an incredible level of detail. The use of water is particularly impressive, especially in the Kamino stages. The Xbox 360 version did have an issue with repeated stuttering when large amounts of particulate matter was being thrown around. Using Force Repulse on a crowd of enemies is almost guaranteed to cause the action to chug or freeze in place briefly. In a heavily timing-based game like this one, that pausing can absolutely ruin a combo or a missile deflection. I have not had the chance to test out the PS3 or PC versions of the game to see if this issue affects them as well.
Ten challenges are available to tackle in addition to the campaign, complete with leaderboard support. They’re short but tough, and achieving platinum medals on them will tax even the best players. In theory, this could make up for the short length of the campaign, if you find this kind of challenge mode engaging.
Eff you, too, FU2
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II remains a step up, but is held back once again by inexplicable shortcomings. The story is abbreviated and unsatisfying, and the length is unforgivably short for a full-priced title with no multiplayer to extend its play value. As the final scenes unfolded, I felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me. The story is simply unfinished, and the game itself is over just as it’s getting into a groove. If it felt like a full game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II would be one of the most improved sequels I’ve ever played. The base gameplay is unquestionably a refinement of what was loose and clunky in the first game. It’s worth a rental, but be prepared to wonder where the last third of your game went as the credits roll.

This game is fun. This game is better than the original. This games lightsabers dismember stormtroopers. Is it too short. Yes. Will there be a Force Unleashed 3. I hope so but who knows. This was a improvement in game play all the way around.

Why only five levels? Why only four locales? TFU1, although not as short had at least 9 levels and more locations. I enjoyed the game but it was over way too quickly. Make KOTOR3 and Battlefront 3 already. Give the fans what they want!!!

this sucks big time the bummer part is it that i played the demo and i thought it was amazing. the fighting was fun kicking some wanna be jango fett butt was awesome doing the mind trick was fun but seeing the review kinda spoiled it knowing that you wont be able to expand like i think in the first one i belive there was more levels in that one then here i mean theres only 3 enviro's wich means oh crap that was a mistake to ask to get later for something like xmas becouse i guess youll be dissapointed but hey i hear that mass effect 2 is comeing in jan wich is like next door to my bday so what i guess im saying is you get two fun space games. what tells them apart is your a dude whos mad like the hulk and can chuck your couch at you with his mind and has these sticks that can cut you into sushi and with mass you get to be a dude you can edit his looks you can team up with some wicked aliens and a few humans do some sweet missions and kick some bug butt who fly around in a huge honey comb ship with a laser that can glass a planet so if you get these 2 you might have alot of fun i know i will

For the PC version, the biggest problem I found was the cutscene loading... meaning that much of the time they didn't. For some of them, much of the data didn't load until after a delay either. For those scenes, it was strange seeing a brief flash of black background and a pair of eyeballs, and then seeing the correct area load and the face materialize. The biggest flaw with the cutscenes alone was the ending. After you defeat Vader and you select either the dark or light side ending, the game just cut to the credits. My first thought was... "Wait. What?" It wasn't until I went into the "Extras" area of the main menu and looked through the cutscenes did I find the actual ending. The light side ending resolved things fairly, but could have been much better. The dark side ending I found sorely disappointing.
As for the "stuttering ... [during] large amounts of particulate matter," depending on the graphics card used, this can or cannot be a problem. The only real graphical problem is the fight between Starkiller (or clone) and Vader. The game slows down, which makes that fight easier, mostly because Vader's counterattacks are telegraphed.
The game also has no real challenge. It was balanced nicely, but if you play the story once and then replay it, your character stays just as powerful as when you finished it before; a level three force repulse pretty much devastates everything. Even on "Unleashed" difficulty, you'll probably die only 10 or 20 times max.

I really do love this game, i'm just so disappointed in how short it is and how the story line was never finished. Graphics and force powers in this game own the first game 10/2 though! Hope the DLC makes up for it, but I expect to be disappointed as alwase.

all the people who worked on this game did what was asked by there boss. I think thay should just do what people want and that is free rome game like knights of the old republic and assasin creed, fallout like this list of games. This game just was not that long you cant do much and you just fill boxed in playing as the starkiller. i do think you should keep him but just make it free rome and maybe some lightsaber customizing or just able to pick a different style of lightsaber. Able it to ineract with peole like help them like lil mini missions or even able to pick and chouse your force powers. Most of all make big maps like assasin creed or really more like fallout but have more then just that one make it able to jump in to a ship and go to a new planit this is just some of what i have came up with i have more deteld ones..........

no diss on anyone who help make this game but if they made the game on a free rome like knights of the old republic, assasin creed, fallout, on that type of engine or what ever you call it it would be a good game. Add travel to outer galicys for a longer game play space fights aswell or even bild or customize your own lightsaber keep starkiller as the person you play as just abile it to pick and mach differ force abilitys. have mini missonsons like to help people or you get in a jam wiht clone tuppers to where you have to kill or jadi mind trick them. just snow balling here i got more.......you get what im trying to saying games like that are the thing of the pass short levels no freedome to rome just fill boxed in cant do what you want to a exstint.

Just played it, games did not always have to be 8+ hours long to be a good game. Fun game play, good voice acting. Definitely worth playing, dark side ending is disappointing, the one level with all the jumping is a pain in the ass.

This game was pretty awesome, just short which sucks. :(
cracker1138
ok i just beat it for the third time did everything, and while yes it is short.... its not bad. I still stick by my original statement, its a sequel in the way empire strikes back was, imagine if empire was the last star wars movie that would blow royally but it wasnt. the story was good and the next one will make it complete the way return of the jedi made the trilogy complete.

The game's short. That much has been said. What isn't mentioned is the different challenges, and just how challenging they really are. The objective might be pretty simple (go and get the holocron and come back), but actually doing it is really quite difficult. The easiest challenge that I've done so far is the Terror Trial. It might be because I maxed out my force repulse early, but I did that trial in about 56 seconds on the first try.
The storyline is short, but you can tell that it really is The Empire Strikes Back of The Force Unleashed.
It has great graphics with very well detailed scenery, the audio is well done, and the voice overs aren't all that bad.
The fun factor really should be considered more when these games get reviewed, because SwTFU2 definately brings the fun home.
suryu
aww too bad nerds maybe when they do tar wars they will bring back the best jedi

I personally say they go back to the "old" Xbox/PS2 days and make a KotOR 3. The KotOR series was pre much one of my favorite games, and I still play them. Great storyline, character customization, you can choose between the light/dark sides... Dual wield, Single wield, Dual-sided... It was just astonishing in ALL aspects. I personally say that it made you feel more immersed in the game, like you are actually carrying out the actions, versus just being along for the ride ie TFU and TFU2 basically are. Great combat and fighting in TFU2, but it just lacks and is too short. Take the improvements there in combat systems and throw it into another Old Republic game with the customization and wallah, best Star Wars game of the Decade, or dare I say, best game overall of teh Decade.
krimsnjustice
That boba fett trailer pissed me off. He works alone. ALONE. Why the hell would he need a squadron of worthless stormtroopers?
