While it could be plain bad timing, it's a little difficult to get too excited about another apocalyptic game at the moment. That is strike one. That Fallen Earth attempts to do some new things with the genre -- high-speed transportation from the start, FPS-like handling for ranged attacks -- is great, and a lack of grinding is refreshing. However, at its core the game just isn't really any more fun to play than any other MMO.
The Pros
- Interesting attempt at FPS-style gameplay
- Early access to vehicles
- Mission assignments in the field
The Cons
- FPS-style gameplay doesn't really work
- Low-rent graphics
Once upon a time the apocalypse was something to be feared--a looming threat, just a call on the red phone away. Now that idea seems quaint. People today are less concerned with death from nukes than with the death of their iPhone batteries. The result: virtual Armageddon playgrounds, and that’s exactly what we get with Fallen Earth. It’s a post-apocalyptic MMO with shooter aspirations. Does it deliver? Not so much.

Welcome Back to the Wasteland
Fallen Earth gets the first plot twist out of the way within the first five minutes, so I don’t feel bad spoiling it for you here. Turns out, you’re a clone bred specifically for the evil whims of Brenhauer, a man seemingly working to rebuild human civilization after its decimation by a nasty virus. In actuality, he’s chasing more nefarious desires. One of his associates is trying to take him down and has enlisted you-- straight out of the birthing chamber--to join the fight. Along the way you’ll perish early and often, but fear not: clones are easily reborn, keeping you fighting as you explore the wasteland.
You’re not fighting on the Capital Wasteland, but it is mighty close. The game takes place on a thoroughly brown expanse filled with mutated beasts that alternate between “peaceful grazing” and “ferocious attacking,” just like in other MMOs. Given the familiar feel and comparisons to the two other wasteland games that have been popular of late, it’s hard not to feel like this is a bit...derivative; however, it’s not all sameness.
You do, almost immediately, get yourself a mount: a horse requiring only occasional care -- the odd bag of grain will get you by. Upgrades to slightly more exciting motorized buggies and ATVs aren’t far off, either. However, they’re no more exciting to ride than the starter nag. The driving experience here makes the simplistic vehicle physics in Borderlands seem positively rich in comparison. Sure beats walking, though.
Class and Care Free
Character creation is typically expansive, offering plenty of visual tweaks to sculpt a character to fit your desires -- so long as you don’t mind a weather-beaten visage. (The wasteland is hell for complexions, apparently.) What you won’t be picking is a class. Progression here goes in whatever direction you like. There are various templates that can be selected based on whether you want to be a long-range shooter or a short-range brawler, but they provide nothing other than suggestions about where you should spend your ability points, which there are never enough of.
One place you’ll surely need to allocate those precious digits is on abilities having to do with crafting. Items like bandages and weapons are hard to find. It makes sense, this being an apocalyptic wasteland and all, but I’d much rather go and drop a few poker chips for some goods (a Vegas-based economy rules here) than spend 20 minutes crafting them. But, if you’re one of those rare souls who’d rather meld a collection of junk into something usable then go and explore the land looking for things to kill, this is, certainly, the game for you.
Meanwhile, those who prefer combat may or may not feel fulfilled. The melee combat is just like in any other MMO – click to attack, then watch the numbers fly – but ranged combat attepts to be different. Select a weapon that launches something and crosshairs will appear on the screen that get bigger as you move and smaller as your skills improve, indicating accuracy like any other shooter. That is definitely what Fallen Earth is trying to be -- a shooter -- but it doesn’t quite work. It could be said that Hellgate: London missed the boat on the MMO side of the merger when it unsuccessfully tried to bring the two genres together. Fallen Earth instead misses the FPS angle.
The fact Fallen Earth falls short is largely thanks to the targets you shoot at. Your average shooter has opponents with at least a modicum of intelligence (whether human or artificial) that require cunning and skill to beat. Here, opponents will typically stand still, ignoring your zeroing in with a glorified pellet gun. Once hit they’ll come a runnin’, zigging and zagging wildly while occasionally warping from here to there, making continued hits difficult. An optimist would say they’re trying to avoid your fire, but they just look confused. And, with no PvP gameplay at all, those brain-dead goons are all you have to shoot at.

Ugliness Abounds
While apocalyptic wastelands are supposed to be nasty, that’s no excuse for the lack of visual fidelity here. Textures are necessarily drab, but they’re also repetitive as tufts of scrubgrass and the like offer the only variety. The game takes place in the rocky desert near the Grand Canyon, a place that in real life is filled with beautiful colors and landscapes. It’s all brown here. Player and character animations are similarly simplistic and the models wouldn’t have stood out a few years ago. It all works and works well enough, but pales in comparison to the visuals provided by other recent entrants to the genre.
On the audio front, there’s a similar lack of variety, with opponents all issuing similar grunts and war cries as they attack or are attacked. Vehicle exhaust tones are universally monotonous, but the various whinnies and grunts from your early four-legged whip are at least authentic enough.

Crafter’s Paradise, Gamers’ Delight?
While it could be plain bad timing, it’s a little difficult to get too excited about another apocalyptic game at the moment. That is strike one. That Fallen Earth attempts to do some new things with the genre -- high-speed transportation from the start, FPS-like handling for ranged attacks -- is great, and a lack of grinding is refreshing. However, at its core the game just isn’t really any more fun to play than any other MMO and that, combined with a middling graphics engine and storyline, means Fallen Earth blends into the background like a desert texture on a sea of brown.

Are you freaking kidding me? Even if he reviewed this during Beta testing he could not be further off... Sorry it is not WoW or Final Fantasy but is is definitly a very good game. You sir should not be reviewing crap with your lackadaisical approach to looking at a game. #1 there has been PvP from Day 1, and with this last patch and the next one PvP is going to be much more intense. #2 Um the game is set starting in the Grand Canyon area, brown and orange and not much vegetation is about all you get, move on and actually play the game a little and maybe you'd see that. #3 I will agree there is a learning curve to how you spend AP, but you get plenty for building a character into a specific category, if you had all the AP in the world everyone would have every stat and skill maxed and be no fun. #4 It is pretty good Graphically speaking, yes it is not Fallout but an MMO could not work with that clean of graphics as not everyone lives in their mothers basement and spends all their cash on new system components. As for the graphics they try to keep a realistic style to them without being cartoonish like other MMO's. I think someone with more skill needs to review this game, I mean come on a stupid game where you roll around and stick crap to a ball made it to the show for a review this game definitely deserves a chance. I'm sorry you did not like the game, but if it is not WoW or a console game you guys around G4 don't tend to give any notice anyway, for those scared away by this bad review, don't be. Get a trial account and see for yourself.

Yeah i agree with Jumper.....this review is 100% inacurate. The reviewer oviosly played this for about 30 minitues. And for those other people that say the game lags and is incomplete....that was when the it first came out. Even Wow had problems when it first came out. Also this game is more like the Mad Max movies than it is Fallout.

I agree with Jumper313. I have tried the game at a friend's and it was amazing. However, it just isn't quite like the post apocalyptic setting I would have expected. Perhaps I am to use to Fallout.

Whereas, I agree that having a different opinion of the game is not a viable basis to attack the \"reviewer's\" credibility, the complete misrepresentation of the game by the \"reviewer\" does open the door. 1. The reviewer seems to have imaginatively fabricated his own version of the game's storyline which he centered around a negligible character who is only mentioned once in the plotline history(as the namesake of a parent corporation) & has no bearing on the game. 2. The reviewer apparantly has a broken \"m\" key on his keyboard, or did not play the game long enough to open the world map & see the PvP zones marked clearly for all to see. The claim that there is no PVP at all in this game, when there is plenty to go around (including not only the S1 PvP zones, but also the numerous Conflict Towns in S2 &S3) makes the review speculative, at best. 3. Bandages & weapons drop regularly from mobs and are readily available at vendors. 4. Anyone who has explored the world of FE knows that the reviewer's description of the landscape is incomplete. The barrenness in S1 is understandable when one considers that those with power after the fall would inevitably keep the more visually aesthetic areas to themselves. The landscapes of S2 & S3 are dramatically different than what the reviewer describes. Ultimately, the reviewer has only succeeded in illustrating how little research was put into the review. Those who have actually played the game long enough to get out of the starter towns, know that the review is woefully inaccurate & incomplete, and in some cases (like the presented storyline) completely fabricated. The idea that the review was actually allowed to be presented to the public in such a manner casts an unfortunate shadow over the legitimate reviews coming from the G4 staff and the management of said staff. That's my 2chips worth... but what do I know? I've actually played the game.

A 3 out of 5 doesn't mean it's a bad game. For all those people saying that it should have got a better numerical score, remember that this is the honest opinion of the \"reviewer\" and may not coincide with your own personal opinion. Just because someone doesn't have the same opinion as you is no reason to attack their credibility. No matter what the numerical score, if you think you'll like the game then why not give it a try?

really im sorry but just becuase this games not WoW becuase at G4 they are the biggist WoW fanbois every they dont even respect a game that doesnt have elves or dwarfs etc. This game is amazing i cant stop playing it really theres a huge playerbase people every where because theres only 1 server and it doesnt even lag barely at all which is amazing. also the crafting system is just the best thing i have every seen. you really feel like the world has ended and you need to scavenge the mats for the thing you are making. The graphics even bad at all i dont even know what there talking about. there is PvP it shows even on the map it just another way to show that they really didnt even play this game very long. Yes i will agree that the FP doesnt really work that well but you can always swich to the reguler 3rd person view. Really try this game and really should not have been a 3 thats just crap. If you liked the Fallout games 1,2 and even 3 get this game you will love it.
Jumper313
Next time, pick someone who has actually PLAYED THE GAME to do the reveiw! Brenhauer??? No PvP??? Did you just pick a couple of keywords & screenshots off the website to write your article? In the future, you may want adam to write articles/reviews of FE... At least we know that he's actually playing the game!

I cant believe in this i waited for this game a long time and now sucks... Damn it!
writfury5
if this game and borderlands had a baby; i'd be happier.

i expected more from this game

The company would have done a 'little' better just releasing it as a Ps3/xbox360 title with co-op. Making it an mmo just makes it die faster.
How many mmo's can people play?
dparish
COuldn't have been a very in-depth review, since the reviewer was unaware of the fact that the game does have PvP. No biggie, I'd give it 4 instead of three though.
hoof_hearted4
looks like fallout 3 to me
TheDrunkardHu
OMG!!! someone finally agrees with me on this.... this game is utter crap... kudos to the devs for developing their own ip, and for working hard on it.... but this just isn't good enough, the game is lack luster, and is filled with lag, and filler... worst case scenario, in my humble opinion.
samiam0605
Wow I had no idea this game was already coming out. I was curious about it thinking it could be my Fallout mmo that will never be. It turns out that is not the case. What a shame.

You couldn't be further from the facts here.
Fallen Earth is more like Mad Max than it is Fallout. You're not living after a nuclear explosion. Its more of a fallen government world.
Its very much like an Old West game infact.
stilllife
I did alpha testing for this game, and I actually thought it was pretty good. I think a 3 might be a bit low for it, I might have given it a 4. The game really is a lot of fun, but I agree with X-play, the graphics are pretty bad compared to the shiny fair of this generation. Had this game been released last gen, it would probably have been praised as tremendously awesome, sadly, this generation, it just doesn't stand out.
TheSledBaron
HEY REMEMBER THAT GAME FALLOUT 3? PEOPLE LIKED THAT RIGHT? LET'S JUST MAKE THAT GAME WITH WORSE GRAPHICS, SOUND GOOD? AWESOME!
