Kid Icarus Uprising Preview: Too Close to the Sun?

Kid Icarus Uprising Preview: Too Close to the Sun?

It’s most likely a must have. Kid Icarus Uprising 3D for the 3DS not only makes Greek god-like flying with the classic Pit character fun, it brings touches of God of War to the new system. It can feel that ginormous.

But you may have to turn down that 3D slider – at least a little bit  -- to avoid some serious vertigo. I was in a fantasy level called The Second Coming of Palutena, a nod to the series’ benevolent and powerful goddess of light. As I swooped and flew high above the world, shooting small, one-eyed enemies, the camera angle changed constantly. By the time I landed upon terra firma, I was pretty green from flying around in 3D.

During that epic flight, I couldn’t help but notice the pale, snake-haired beauty known as Medusa. She stood there in the distance, looming, giant as Helios in God of War 3, maybe bigger. Pit immediately wants to do battle with her. But he’s not yet strong enough. Just looking at Pit in 3D with his grim determination, can-do attitude and heavenly wings of flight made me think, man, why has this series been buried for so long?

But in the air, was I flying on rails? I wasn’t able to move from side to side very much. So to test the theory, I decided not to use the analog button to direct my flight at all. I still got to my destination without dying or hitting walls. It’s disappointing, but it makes some sense. You’re shooting at various minor baddies constantly. If you had to worry about rising up and diving down in an open world environment, you might easily get frustrated.

To arm myself, I had the choice of three weapons, Blade, Claws and Orbitar. I chose the Blade which is a well-balanced weapon with a fair amount of reach. In a level called The Reaper’s Line of Sight, dozens of monsters appeared to do battle. After they were slain, I was led me to an eventual boss battle with Twin Bellows.

He’s appeared in the series before, but not with this kind of creepy detail. A Cerberus-like creature, but with two, fire-spewing heads, he clearly doesn’t want anyone lurking around his lair.  But battling on the ground wasn’t completely inspirational either. Enemies like Twin Bellows enter into such close-quarters combat that it takes you entirely out of the 3D awesome-nees. Ultimately, it’s a camera angle issue Nintendo should clearly fix before release.

It’s rumored that Kid Icarus will feature battles in the air and some online multiplayer possibilities. You’ll also be able to find and collect an arsenal of weapons. None of this was shown in the demo, however. Still, what was seen of Kid Icarus Uprising 3D left me wanting more, much more.

I think this game is going to be great. It will please newcomers and old fans of the series. The layout of each level look good, with a flying session then a ground battle. Also, the flight scenes are a great way to show off what the 3DS is capable of. I'm a bit disappointed that this isn't a launch title, but the saying is "good things come to those who wait"

if you are buying from gamestop, you can trade in your old system at the time of purchase for a discount. $100 for a XL...$75 for a dsi etc.

I wish nintendo had a trade in program. It seems every few months they come out with a new DS with a cool extra feature. I already bought a DS Lite and then a few months later they come out with the DSi and now the 3DS. I hope they have a 2d version of this game or something.

I hate how the general coverage of the 3DS has been "It has 3D, but we won't show a screenshot of the 3D as a point of comparison between the 3DS's actual output and the renderable output on a standard monitor."

It raises doubt on the 3D capability if we have no point of comparison between 2D and 3D even if showing the 3D in question can only be done in a poor quality.
